John Pascarella, associate dean of Academic and Research Programs at Kansas State University-Olathe and professor of biology, has been named the dean of the College of Sciences at Sam Houston State University, effective July 1.
Pascarella will take over from Jerry Cook, SHSU’s associate vice president for Research and Sponsored Programs, who has filled in as acting dean since Aug. 1, 2011, while a national search was conducted for the position.
“Dr. Pascarella’s diverse experiences in higher education administration, coupled with his enthusiastic vision for the College of Sciences, will make him a tremendous asset to the university,” said SHSU provost and vice president for Academic Affairs Jaimie Hebert. “We’re very excited that he will be a part of our academic community.”
Pascarella has also served as associate dean of Faculty and Research Programs and professor of biology in the College of Science and Technology at Georgia Southern University and assistant, associate and professor of biology at Valdosta State University in Georgia. At VSU, he also served as coordinator of the Center for Applied Research and was an administrative intern in the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs.
He spent one year at the National Science Foundation Directorate for Biological Sciences as an American Association for the Advancement of Science and Technology policy fellow.
A native of Prairie Village, Kan., Pascarella has bachelor’s degrees in biology and Latin American studies from the University of Kansas and a doctorate in biology from the University of Miami.
Pascarella’s research in plant population and community ecology has been supported by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission, Georgia Department of Natural Resources, and other sources.
He is the author of peer-reviewed publications in the American Journal of Botany, American Naturalist, Biotropica, Ecology, Ecosytems, Forest Ecology and Management, and many more.
He has made professional presentations on his work at conferences, workshops and seminars across the country. He is a member of the Botanical Society of America, Ecological Society of America, Sigma Xi research society, and serves as editor-in-chief of Castanea, the journal of the Southern Appalachian Botanical Society.
“I am honored to be selected as the dean of the College of Sciences at Sam Houston State University,” Pascarella said. “During my visit, I was very impressed with the commitment to student success and the opportunities to grow and support academic and research programs. I look forward to working with our faculty, students, staff and administration across these areas.”
The College of Sciences at SHSU is comprised of the departments of agricultural and industrial sciences, biological sciences, chemistry, computer science, geography and geology, mathematics and statistics, nursing, and physics.
