The Sam Houston State University Junior Fellows will soon take to the gridiron once again, promising some new twists as they host their annual charity football fundraiser.

This year’s free, public event will be held on Saturday (April 21), at 1 p.m. on Pritchett Field’s lower field area.

“We’re billing this year’s game as Democrats and Republicans, rather than versus, to reinforce the cooperative nature of the game,” said Mike Yawn, political science professor and Junior Fellows adviser. “Members of both parties will play side-by-side on each team for the first time rather than on opposing teams.”

For the first time, a play-by-play announcer will call the game.

“We’ve asked one of the students from SHSU’s excellent mass communication department to assist,” said Justin Beiser, Junior Fellows’ vice president. “No doubt we’ll score extra points with the spectators, as they will enjoy hearing the plays called during the game.”

In addition, the Fellows will bring back popular halftime games such as tug-of-war, sack races and a Frisbee toss, with prizes being awarded to the winning children. Huntsville Mayor Mac Woodward will be on hand to distribute the prizes to the winner.

“I look forward to this event every year,” Woodward said. “I encourage everyone to come out and root for the team of their choice and support two great causes in our community.”

Over the event’s four-year history, the Junior Fellows have raised approximately $10,000, an amount that has been split between the YMCA and the John Holcombe Scholarship Fund. This year’s fundraiser has thus far added another $4,000 to be split between two.

“These are quality causes,” said Junior Fellows alumna Megan Bryant, who will be returning to assist with the event. “The YMCA helps the community in so many ways, and if things go as we expect, we’ll raise sufficient funds at this year’s game to push the Holcombe Scholarship to a level that will allow us to endow it officially. It’s a tribute to the civic-mindedness of the community and to the memory of Professor Holcombe.”

The Political Science Junior Fellows organization is committed to promoting education, public service and professionalism by implementing classroom lessons with hands-on learning experiences that are both beneficial and enjoyable, according to Yawn.

“The Junior Fellows participate at some level in 130 events for the university and community every year, and events of this type help students learn the value of community involvement as well as working with people with different backgrounds, skill sets, and opinions, and that’s very much in the spirit of this game,” he said.
