Sam Houston State University’s Class of 2012 now has an opportunity to leave a legacy that will make a difference in the lives of students who follow them.

The 2012 Senior Class Gift campaign began on Feb. 22 and will extend though April 30, although gifts will be accepted through the end of December. Contributions will be applied toward the establishment of a scholarship to be awarded to an SHSU student.

The senior gift initiative has been in place at many universities across the nation and was implemented this year at Sam Houston State through University Advancement’s annual giving program.

“Other universities have senior giving programs, and we felt it was a worthwhile program to start,” said Meggan Thompson, assistant director of annual giving.

“The senior gift campaign allows for students to learn about giving back to Sam Houston before they graduate,” she said. “And, of course, once they graduate, we hope they will continue to give back as alumni.

“We suggest a gift of $10 or more, but even a gift of $5 can help change the life of a current or future Bearkat,” Thompson said. “Every gift, no matter the size, will make an impact. But ultimately, participation is more important than the amount that is given.”

Contributions to the annual fund help support colleges, academic departments, programs and scholarships. The senior gift, however, is specifically designated for a scholarship.

“State appropriations for SHSU continue to drop, with less than a third of our budget now coming from the state,” said Cindy Truax, director of annual giving. “We rely more and more on gifts from our alumni and friends to help fund scholarships and programs. It is a goal of the senior gift program for our students to understand why it is important to give back to their university now and as future alumni.”

Students have several payment options from which to choose, including credit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express or Discover), ACH debit, check or cash. Gifts can be made online or by downloading a campaign form at www.shsu.edu/giving and sending it to SHSU Box 2537 or dropping it off in the Administration Building Room 120.
