Students To Present 'Survival Art' For Capstone Project

Senior art students will be presenting their bodies of work in two galleries on the Sam Houston State University campus as part of a series of exhibitions for the Art 4319 class this semester.
The “Survival Tools for the Artist: Professional Practices” course is the capstone class for senior art majors, during which they learn to “do things that artists are supposed to do,” including writing artist statements, and applying for gallery exhibitions, graduate programs, and grants, according to Becky Finley, associate professor of photography, who teaches the class.
“These exhibitions represent our students’ senior thesis projects,” Finley said. “Whereas in the Graduating Senior Exhibit, held at the end of each semester, faculty install and promote the exhibition which consists of one or two pieces chosen by the students, in this exhibition, students have the opportunity to spotlight their art representing a cohesive body of work. Students are responsible for installing and promoting their own exhibitions.
“Students are paired up for two person exhibitions which also makes them work together to figure out a way to put their concepts together in order to have a cohesive exhibition,” she said.
The first “Survival Tools” exhibit, which will be on display in the Lowman Student Center Gallery through March 16, features the photography of Bobby Palisin and Ashley Dehoyos.
Their project presents the examinations of two artists who take to the streets of Huntsville at night: one trying to overcome insomnia, the other exploring color, light and mystery.
From March 19-24, Stephen Lee and Geoffrey Rascher will present their perspectives on identity and memory through layering through mixed media and photography, also in the LSC Gallery.
Daniel Bertalot and Kimberly Turman will exhibit their exploration of memory, personal history, and relationships using mixed media that includes photography, paining, drawing, sculpture and found objects, from March 26 - 31 in the Students of Fine Art Gallery.
“A photographic study of personal space, irony, and ways in which we as humans arrange our environments,” will be presented April 2-7 in the SOFA Gallery for a collection of pieces by Amanda Giogaia and Megan Laurie.
A reception for their "Transcendent" show has been scheduled for April 2, from 7-9 p.m. in the SOFA Gallery.
On April 9-14 in the SOFA Gallery, Cheryl Meade and Sandra Zavala will showcase sculpture, painting and mixed media to explore personal experiences, as well as color photography to explore mundane personal space from a dynamic perspective.
Finally, Cynthia Conner and Jamie Kinosian will feature their use of “illustration in a way different way,” from April 16-21 in the SOFA Gallery.
“Conner explores the connection we as humans have to nature and fantasy,” Finley said. “Kinosian is interested in human relationships and interactions.”
