Sam Houston State University will join with the South Montgomery Woodlands Chamber of Commerce for the Grand Opening of the university’s new academic facility in The Woodlands on Wednesday, May 30, at 2 p.m.

Sam Houston State University–The Woodlands Center is located at 3380 College Park Drive, and the public is invited to attend and tour the facility. There is even a way for those who can’t attend to participate in activities.

“The theme of the event is based on our core values of tradition, honor, spirit and success,” said Maggie Collum, SHSU director of university events.

The event will begin with an opening ceremony, ribbon cutting and dedication of the Lois W. Kolkhorst Atrium on the first floor at the south entrance of the building.

In addition to State Rep. Kolkhorst, speakers will include SHSU President Dana Gibson, Texas State University System Chancellor Brian McCall, Senior Vice Chancellor/Chief Operating Officer of the Lone Star College System Rand Key, and U.S. Congressman Kevin Brady.

“Those who can’t be at The Woodlands in person can participate in the Grand Opening 'virtual event,' which will be broadcast live via the Web at www.shsu.edu/woodlands/,” Collum said. “They can view activities and take a virtual tour of the building from their home, in the office, or on the Huntsville campus in room 320 of the Lowman Student Center, where refreshments will be served.”

Those who would like to participate through Twitter can use the hashtag #SHSUWoodlands to leave comments.

“Guests who participate via social media and at the virtual event will be eligible for give-away bags full of SHSU goodies,” Collum said. “We will also have a drawing for a bag of goodies on May 31 for those who leave comments on Twitter.”

A reception following the ribbon cutting will take place from 2:30 to 4 p.m. with a theme for each floor.

The first floor will feature a one-stop shop and giveaways including an eco-tote bag and a variety of SHSU items. The “Discover a Great Name” video about SHSU can be viewed in room 110. Barnes and Noble Bookstore will have SHSU items for sale, PepsiCo and FritoLay will have free items, and guests can register for Astros tickets.

The second floor will have a virtual lounge where guests can post their pictures and tell others about the event and the new facility via a live YouTube video.

“Guests who participate in the virtual lounge will receive a special gift,” said Collum.

On the third floor, guests will be able to meet Sammy the Bearkat while enjoying sweets and treats.

The fourth floor will showcase the state-of-the-art Faculty Support Center and tour the testing center and computer lab.

During the event, the SHSU School of Music will provide music.
