During academic year 2012-13, the Center for Academic Community Engagement held a photo contest open to students enrolled in ACE courses and selected winners for Best Action, Best Community, and Best Group photos.
“Many excellent photos were submitted that captured the community engagement projects that the students had experienced,” said Joyce McCauley, director of the center.
The winner for each category was:
Best ACE Action Photo: Michael Eubanks
Eubanks is a junior communications studies major with a psychology minor. He was enrolled in, Community Applied Communications ACE course. The community engagement experience was working closely with the Cheer Live organization putting together a marketing event. The photo shows fellow classmates working their booth table at Cheer Live and putting their communication techniques to the test. The class members met with customers at the Cheer Live event as salesmen after going through preparation, research, and eventually direct communication at the event.
“Michael personally learned the importance of preparation and how that makes an impact on the outcome,” said McCauley. “The project benefited Cheer Live with an increase in sales and Michael gained valuable lessons and work experience in a company.”
Best ACE Community Photo: Sonja Stapleton
Stapleton is a senior interdisciplinary studies major with an EC-6 generalist and EC-12 special education minor. She was enrolled in a Literacy Methods ACE course. Her community engagement experience was working at O.A. Reaves Elementary School assisting teachers. Her winning photo shows her reading her self-created story to third graders, one of which was her personal mentee.
“During the course project, Sonja worked with her mentee to brainstorm and create his own story to share with his family and peers at an author's celebration,” said McCauley. “Working with the elementary students gave Sonja insights into what is needed of teachers in the market place as well as how to relate personally with the children.”
Best ACE Group Photo: Laura Morais
Morais is a communications studies major. She was enrolled in the Community Applied Communications ACE course. Her class partnered with Montgomery County for Adoption Day, an event to celebrate families adopting children in and around Conroe.
“Her photo is a group shot of her colleagues in her class and their community partners—each with a smile for their involvement in Adoption Day,” said McCauley.
