In compliance with state legislative bill SB 939, signed into law by Texas Gov. Rick Perry in July, all Sam Houston State University employees will be required to take mandatory training on recognizing and reporting child abuse.
Beginning Sept. 1, employees will receive an email to their university accounts informing them that they have been assigned the course, “Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse.” The email will also contain instructions on how to access and complete the 10-minute training, which is offered online through the university’s learning management system, Talent Management.
Because children frequently come to college and university campuses, SB 939 extends prior legislation by requiring institutions of higher learning to implement policies protecting children from child abuse and other maltreatment.
“All university employees are required to take the training, regardless of whether or not they are employed in a job that normally comes into contact with children,” said TJ Bittick, human resources specialist.
“Managers need to be proactive in ensuring all of their employees complete the training within 30 days,” she said. “They may need to verbally communicate the requirement to those university employees who do not regularly access their employee email as a part of their employment; for example, custodial, grounds keeping, facilities maintenance, and student worker employees may need to be advised of the need to go into their employee accounts to read the e-mail and access the training in a timely manner.”
The course can be accessed 24 hours a day, seven days a week from any campus computer or from any computer from which the employee can log into My Sam. The training is not currently enabled for mobile devices.
The training statistics are trackable through the LMS. Once the training is assigned, Human Resources will notify managers by email of any employee who is five days or more past the deadline. Managers will be expected to ensure their employees comply with the requirement, Bittick said.
