You know them from television’s Parks and Recreation and The League, but on Aug. 26, actors and stand-up comedians Aziz Ansari and Nick Kroll will visit Sam Houston State University to help welcome students back to campus as part of the Kat Comedy Showcase.
Each will deliver their brands of comedy beginning at 8 p.m. in the Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.
“Aziz Ansari is one of the top entertainers on the comedy circuit, performing stand-ups, co-starring in a television show and appearing in highly acclaimed movies. Picking him was an easy call,” said Steven Begnaud, program coordinator for the Department of Student Activities, which is sponsoring the event. “He is good friends with Nick Kroll, who is a very good comedian and actor. They are excited to co-headline the Kat Comedy Showcase.”
Ansari is currently co-starring opposite Amy Poehler in the Emmy-nominated NBC series Parks and Recreation.
He has appeared in such films as Epic and This is the End and recently released his second hour-long standup special Dangerously Delicious.
In 2005, Rolling Stone named him their choice for “Hot Standup” on their annual Hot List, and he was also awarded the “Jury Award” for best standup at the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen in 2006.
Kroll stars as ‘Ruxin’ on FX’s critically acclaimed series The League and created and stars in the Comedy Central series Kroll Show. He also has appeared in films such as Get Him to the Greek, Dinner for Schmucks and Date Night.
Kroll has been named one of Variety’s “10 comics to watch” and was featured in Comedy Central’s “Hot List of ’09.”
Doors open at 7 p.m.
Tickets are free to SHSU students with an active BearkatOne card and are limited to one per student. Students can get their free ticket from noon to 6 p.m. each day through Aug. 23, while supplies last, in Johnson Coliseum Office 235.
Any remaining last-minute tickets will be available Aug. 24-25, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Aug. 26, from 2-9:45 p.m.
Tickets may become available to the public, and if so, that time is to be determined, according to Begnaud.
SHSU’s Comedy Showcase, an event closely related to Sammypalooza, is in its third installment. Previous comedians appearing for the showcase include Gabriel Iglesias and Mike Epps.
“With Mike Epps bringing in more than 3,000 students in March, this show is hyped to sell out quickly,” Begnaud said.
