In honor of Conflict Resolution Month in October, Student Legal and Mediation Services will sponsor speakers who will share their advice with Sam Houston State University students on conflict resolution in the workplace, family, classroom and the world, in general.

Conflicted couple“Conflict is a constant in our lives, whether in the home, in school, or in the workplace,” said Gene Roberts, director of the Office of Student Legal and Mediation Services. “Our office wants to help students understand how to constructively, professionally, and maturely handle conflict.”

Presentations will begin on Thursday (Oct. 3), when Houston-based attorney, mediator, and arbitrator Lori LaConta will discuss “Conflict Resolution in the Workplace” at noon in Lowman Student Center Room 304.

LaConta has more than 13 years’ experience in conflict resolution and is an adjunct professor of business management at the University of Houston Clear Lake.

Judge Alvin Zimmerman will present “Conflict Resolution in the Family” on Oct. 8, beginning at noon in LSC Room 315.

Zimmerman was selected to be among “The Best Lawyers in America” and has broad legal and mediation experience, including presiding as a family court judge, according to Roberts. Zimmerman is also the immediate past chairperson of the State Bar of Texas’s Alternative Dispute Resolution Section.

Karey Barnes, director of judicial affairs at South Texas College, is an expert in the field of conflict resolution in the education setting. He will present “Conflict Resolution in Education” on Oct. 15, at 2 p.m. in LSC Room 315.

Finally, Leah Boyd will present “Conflict Resolution in the World” on Oct. 25 at noon in LSC Room 304.

Boyd is an attorney and the director of justice initiatives at African Leadership and Reconciliation Ministries in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, where she provides peacemaking training to government officials and religious leaders in Africa.

The American Bar Association, the Association for Conflict Resolution and the Texas Association of Mediators all recognize October as the time to focus on mediation, conflict resolution, and peacemaking.

“As part of our effort to help students to learn conflict resolution skills, we’re sponsoring these four speakers in four weeks, who are at the top of their game,” said Roberts, who is also the president-elect of the Texas Association of Mediators and serves on the Council of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Section for the State Bar of Texas. “These speakers have real-world experience, have exceptional training, and are recognized by their peers as being some of the top peacemakers in the state.”
