Earth Week To Promote Recycling, Fitness

Sam Houston State University’s Recreational Sports department will celebrate Earth Day for an entire week with a series of activities designed to increase awareness and get students, faculty and staff members moving.

Earth Week will begin Monday (April 15), when students can make their pledge to recycle more, take shorter showers, or other activities to become more “green” and then tell their friends about it through Instagram.

During the “Make Your Pledge” event, Rec Sports will have a photo booth set up in the Recreational Sports Center from 2-5 p.m., during which students can take a photo with their written pledge and pick up some giveaways to “help you kick off your new sustainable lifestyle,” said Melissa Fadler, associate director for Rec Sports.

For every one mile pedaled, one pound of carbon dioxide produced by vehicles is saved, according to Fadler.

On Tuesday (April 16), students, faculty and staff can save several pounds of CO2 while taking a bike ride around the SHSU campus and downtown Huntsville with the Outdoor Recreation program.

The “Two-Wheel Clinic” will be from 5:30-7:30 p.m., beginning at the Recreational Sports Center. Students should bring their own bikes and helmets.

On Wednesday (April 17), Rec Sports will celebrate the warmer weather and the Earth by moving its Yoga class outside.

“Fresh Air Yoga” will be offered on the RSC Pool Deck from 6-7 p.m.

Throughout the week, Rec Sports will also be collecting clothing and other textile items in the Lowman Student Center Mall Area and in the RSC from 5-7 p.m. With each donation, students can receive an SHSU Earth Week water bottle.

In addition, those who bring two items of clothing for donation to the Recreational Sports Center Monday through Friday can climb the rock wall for free.

“Earth Week provides Bearkats with a number of great opportunities to learn about sustainable practices on campus and also gives students a chance to start cleaning out their closets before their end of the year packing,” she said.

Clothing items, including textiles, will be collected by American Textile Recycling Services.
“The clothes that we collect will be weighed at the end of the week for the One Shirt Challenge that we are participating in with Sustain U, a T-shirt company that makes everything from 100-percent recycled materials,” said Kat Kuczaj, Rec Sports outdoor/camp coordinator. “American Textile Recycling Services in Houston will take them to their warehouse where they will be sorted.

“All clothing, shoes and textiles that are reusable will go to thrift stores around the Houston area to be resold, and the unusable pieces will be used to make other textiles such as wipe rags, upholstery stuffing, etc.,” she said. “Clothes, shoes, old towels, sheets, fabric scraps will be accepted; in any condition as long as they are not wet or already mildewed.”
