Series Of Concerts To Play Out Fall Semester

The SHSU School of Music will begin winding down the fall semester with a series of concerts beginning Monday (Dec. 2).
That day, student drummers will present a “potpourri” of percussion performances for a “Night of Percussion,” beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the Gaertner Performing Arts Center Concert Hall.
The concert will feature SHSU’s three chamber groups: the Sam Houston Percussion Group, the University Percussion Ensemble, and the SHSU Steel Band, as well as percussion soloists, representing “a little bit of everything we do in the percussion area at SHSU,” according to associate professor John Lane.
“The music will include contemporary percussion ensembles, ragtime xylophone solos, marimba soloists, Mexican marimba, Caribbean and Latin music via the Steel Band, and a little surprise as a preview to next season,” Lane said.
The Sam Houston Percussion Group is directed by Lane and the University Percussion Ensemble is directed by adjunct instructor Matt Holm.
Admission is free.
Simultaneously, the chamber music class will perform “an evening of music in the intimate setting of chamber music” during a recital on Monday at 7:30 p.m., in the GPAC Recital Hall.
The concert—which will feature smaller ensembles, ranging between two-to-four players—will include works by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Gliere, among others, according to Javier Pinell, associate professor of violin.
“With a strong chamber class this semester, the program will include masterworks ranging from the classical to contemporary musical periods,” he said. “This is an excellent opportunity to enjoy the wonderful repertoire written for this genre.”
Admission is free.
On Tuesday (Dec. 3), an “Extravaganza” of jazz music will be performed as six student groups play a range of 19th- and 20th-century works at 7:30 p.m. in the GPAC Concert Hall.
The concert will feature the SHSU Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Modified Band, Jazz Lab Band, the Jazz Improvisation class, Artistry in Rhythm and the Coalescence Quartet, all under the direction of assistant professor Aric Schneller.
Tickets are $15 for general admission, $12 for senior citizens and $5 for SHSU students. They can be purchased at the GPAC Box Office at 936.294.2339 or shsu.edu/boxoffice.
On Sunday (Dec. 8), the Violin Studio will present a free recital that will include masterworks ranging from the Baroque to 20th-century musical periods, at 1 p.m. in the GPAC Recital Hall.
Violinists in the classes of Pinell and adjunct instructor of violin Naomi Gjevre will play concertos by Mendelssohn, Bruch, and Mozart and others, including J. S. Bach’s celebrated "Chaconne in D minor" for violin solo.
Admission is free.
Finally, on Dec. 10, the Huntsville Youth Orchestra will perform at 7 p.m. in the GPAC Concert Hall.
The Huntsville Youth Orchestra is a string orchestra program for local musicians ages 5-18 that meets on the SHSU campus. It was started in 1986 by professor emerita Carol Smith as a teacher-training program for SHSU’s string music education majors.
“Some of the children performing have been in the program for eight years and are quite advanced, while some of the younger children have started just this fall,” said Gjevre, who now directs the program. “The program offers a unique opportunity for the children of Huntsville to learn to play a string instrument since there are no string programs in the Huntsville Independent School District.
“Once a week, the children rehearse with their particular string group and also receive a weekly private lesson,” she said. “All of the teaching and conducting is done by SHSU string music majors, under the guidance of SHSU string faculty.”
