Center To Show ‘The Time Is Now’ To Get Fin-Educated

Sam Houston State University’s Student Money Management Center will host its fifth annual Financial Literacy Week Feb. 25-28, aimed at fin-educating university students on the ins and outs of money management.

Jacki Brossman-Ashorn, director of the Student Money Management Center, emphasizes the importance of financial literacy, which is “simply put, the ability to understand and manage your money,” amongst all students.

“Financial literacy is important because everything you do in life requires making sound financial decisions,” she said. “The financial decisions you make impact not only your present, but also your future.”

This year’s Financial Literacy Week will include a variety of events, ranging from “Healthy Meals on a Dime” to the keynote speaker, actor Andy Buckley, from the television show “The Office.”

Financial Literacy Week will officially begin on Monday (Feb. 25) with a series of presentations in Lowman Student Center Room 320, starting at 11 a.m. with “How to Stash Your Cash” and followed by “Be Your Own Boss,” presented by SHSU Small Business Development Center director Bob Barrigan at 1 p.m., and “The Guide to Financial Aid Success,” presented by Christine Liles and Kim Nettles from SHSU’s Financial Aid Office. That evening, the center will show students how to have “Healthy Meals on a Dime,” beginning at 5 p.m. in the Old Main Market’s Parker Dining Hall.

Tuesday (Feb. 26) will begin with more presentations in LSC Room 320, starting at 11 a.m. with “Education Dollars and Cents,” presented by Amy Wilson, from the Financial Aid Scholarships Office and followed by “Investing in Your Future,” beginning at 12:30 p.m. and presented by Tyler Johns from Edward Jones Investment Firms.

That afternoon, beginning at 2 p.m., Gary Lanier, from the Texas Dow Employees Credit Union, will present “Credit Cards: Make Them Work For You” and Tiffany Ivanosky, from TLC’s “Extreme Couponing,” will end the day’s presentations with the “Art of Penny Pinching” at 4 p.m.

Financial Literacy Week will culminate Wednesday (Feb. 27) with the week’s two main events: the keynote speaker presentation on investing at a young age and the debut of the “Financing Your Ride” series, the newest FLW event that highlights auto loans and lending.

Buckley’s keynote presentation will begin at 11 a.m. in the Lowman Student Center Theater.
The actor, also known as David Wallace from the TV series “The Office,” will provide an interesting take on financial literacy, according to Brossman-Ashorn.

“Every year we try to find someone new, fresh and exciting. We had a peer counselor, who recently graduated, who was obsessed with ‘The Office’ and suggested it,” she said. “In addition to his role on ‘The Office,’ Andy Buckley works at Merrill-Lynch.”

Buckley attended Stanford University, where he graduated in 1987 with a bachelor's degree in political science; he also studied acting with local coaches as well.

After college and with no luck in acting, he started a career at an investing firm while still auditioning for various acting roles. He landed the role of David Wallace, Dunder-Mifflin's chief financial officer, in 2006. According to an article from the Wall Street Journal, the producers of “The Office” liked that he had a legitimate business background and was the “perfect fit.”

His keynote address will highlight investing, the importance of starting young and the basics of how to be successful in it.

That afternoon, “Financing Your Ride” will be presented in LSC Room 315, beginning at 2 p.m.

“We have a local banker who’s going to talk about the ins and outs of auto loans, from the perspective of sharing everything the auto lenders don’t want you to know,” Brossman said. “It’s the insiders cut, which will be really useful for students. I’m excited about it.”

Four final events will round out Financial Literacy Week on Thursday (Feb. 28), all hosted in LSC Room 320. Lori Lehmann, from First National Bank of Huntsville, will begin the day at 11 a.m. by presenting “Loans and Lending,” followed by “Fun on a Budget” which will be presented at 12:30 p.m. by Meredith Conrey, from SHSU’s Student Leadership Development Center.

“Meredith Conrey is going to come and talk about fun things you can do that are budget friendly and also ways to get involved in your community,” Brossman-Ashorn said.

At 2 p.m., Drew Miller, from the Counseling Center, will give a presentation on “Relationships and Money,” and Financial Literacy Week will conclude with Gerald Allphin, from the University Police Department, on identity theft entitled “Identity Theft: Don’t Lose it All” at 4 p.m.

Financial Literacy Week contains events for all areas of interest and includes incentives for students to attend.

“Students can win one of three $650 scholarships by attending a lot of events,” Brossman-Ashron said. “For every event you attend, you will receive a stamp. Once you have received four stamps, you can fill out the back of a stamp card with your contact information and turn it into one of the SMMC’s designated drop boxes to compete in a drawing.”

In addition to individual awards, organizations can participate for the chance to earn one of three prizes, including $1,000 for first place, $750 for second place, and $500 for third place, based on the percentage of members in attendance of the events and the total number of attendees at each event throughout the entire week.

“The prizes really encourage students to attend more events. The more they attend, the greater their chances of winning are,” Brossman-Ashorn said.

In addition to the various events and contests, this year’s Financial Literacy Week will pioneer the use of technology as an integral part of their events.

“Another exciting thing is that some of the events will be videoed by SHSU Online and posted, even on Blackboard, so students that can’t attend will still be able to observe,” Brossman-Ashorn said. “The presentations that are videoed will also be available on the SMMC website and on YouTube.”

The students and peer counselors get feedback from each event that the Student Money Management Center hosts to ensure that each student’s desires are catered to, which Brossman-Ashorn said is one of the reasons for the growing success of the center.
