Luis GaitanSophomore animation major Luis Gaitan, who was featured in a story last year on his internship with Epic Software, is not just designing software anymore. Construction has been approved for his very first commissioned sculpture that will be displayed in front of Epic Software.

After viewing Gaitan’s projects as part of the SHSU art department’s W.A.S.H. (Workshop in Art Studio and History) exhibit, EPIC Software president Vic Cherubini commissioned Gaitan to create a sculpture piece to be displayed in front of the building.

Gaitan spent December completing three review sessions and presenting his ideas to all of the company staff.

“In the first session I had to show my initial ideas and designs; in the second they wanted to see the new sculpture with water and light; and in the last review, it was approved,” Gaitan said.

Gaitan’s design was built around his view of the work environment at Epic Software.

“My inspiration is the idea that various departments at Epic are different from each other, yet come together to create one whole company.  My sculpture is inspired by the concept of separate individual parts coming together to make a greater whole,” Gaitan said.

Gaitan and an assistant will build the sculpture out of shipping container metal.  It also will feature elements of water and light.

The sculpture will include six triangles surrounding a centerpiece, the logo for Epic Software.  Each triangle represents one element of Epic’s team, such as a triangle for graphic design and a triangle for accounting, he said.

Construction on the sculpture will commence on Feb. 1, and it will be available for public viewing in March.
