Homecoming 2013 To Celebrate SHSU's 'Bearkat Dynasty'

Bearkats can get out their duck calls, dress in camouflage, and grow beards for this year’s Bearkat Dynasty Homecoming Week, Oct. 7-12.

“The Homecoming theme ‘Bearkat Dynasty’ really has a two part meaning,” said associate director of Student Activities Bandon Cooper. "It is a tribute to the original, fun and popular reality TV series ‘Duck Dynasty,’ but it also is a tribute to the amazing lineage of students, educators and history that this great institution has produced.“

As the week commences everyone will be “happy happy happy!”

On Monday (Oct. 7) in Bearkat Plaza at noon the kick-off rally will, well…kick off the week of festivities. President Dana Gibson, Bearkat football coach Willie Fritz, and several SHSU football players will pump up the crowd and introduce the homecoming queen and king candidates.

Student Activities will host the annual “SAM Jam Carnival” on Wednesday (Oct. 9) from 7-11 p.m. in the Holleman Field parking lot, featuring food and fun rides, including a Ferris wheel.

On Thursday Bearkats will take command of Sam Houston Avenue during the traditional Homecoming parade, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

With around 100 entries-including student organizations, alumni, business from Huntsville, honored alumni, and political candidates, a lot of candy will be thrown and laughs will be shared as Bearkats present their best interpretation of the Bearkat Dynasty theme.

On Friday (Oct. 11) SHSU honors the Class of 1963 with the Golden Circle Luncheon at 11 a.m. in the Lowman Student Center and celebrates the success and contributions of five of SHSU’s alumni during the Distinguished Alumni Gala that evening.

The gala will recognize the Distinguished Alumni Award recipients Damian Mandola, Sam Monroe, and Trisha S. Pollard, the Outstanding Young Alumni Award recipient Jenna Jackson and the Service Award recipient Wilfred O. Dietrich.

Gameday activities will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday when SHSU graduates are invited to the Alumni and Friends Coffee in the John R. Ragsdale Visitor and Alumni Center.

At noon the “Bearkat Alley” tailgating area will open up for the fans, offering free food and activities as they prepare for the SHSU Bearkats versus Lamar Cardinals game at 2 p.m.

During halftime, the Bearkat Marching band will preform and the 2013 Homecoming king and queen will be announced.

Also on Saturday (Oct. 12), beginning at 8:45 a.m., the Black Alumni Club and African American Friends of SHSU are hosting a scholarship golf tournament. It will be held at Raven Nest golf club and will both benefit and honor the William Powell Scholarship.

After the game SHSU’s annual Black Alumni and Friends Postgame Reception will be held in the LSC Ballroom at 5:30 p.m.

“Homecoming is a great time for students to reconnect and reunite,” said Cooper. “It is great to see the students interacting with the alumni. They get to see the great things Bearkats are doing and what they, as students, will be doing after they graduate.”
