Course To Examine German Culture Through Film
The Sam Houston State University foreign languages department will celebrate and explore the German culture through film through its (first) course this spring.
The German film course will include a weekly screening and discussion on Wednesdays, from 6-8:45 p.m. beginning Jan. 16. Classes will be held in the Evans Complex Theatre, in room 105.
“This film course offers an opportunity to experience German culture without having to learn the language first; all films and discussions will be in English,” said James Frankki, assistant professor of German.
In promoting interest in the German culture and language in the community, the course will be available for class credit as FOLG 3361, as well as for auditing by the public, who can attend the sessions and participate for free.
“In this course we will experience the history of German cinema, beginning with the silent films of the 1920s, the expressionist and vampire films, to the World War II films such as the 1981 film ‘Das Boot,’” Frankki said. “We will then conduct a survey of more light-hearted post-unification films such as ‘Run, Lola, Run’ and ‘Good-Bye Lenin,’ and a discussion of recent releases from 21st century German cinema will round out the course.”

SHSU’s Finest Sought For Sammy Nominations
The Student Activities Department is seeking SHSU’s outstanding students, organizations and advisers for the 19th Annual Sammy Awards.
“The Sammys serve as SHSU’s official student award ceremony and really showcases our amazing student accomplishments,” said Brandon Cooper, Student Activities associate director. “The awards are a way for the university to recognize the outstanding students and organizations that we have.”
Awards will be given to a total of 25 individuals and organizations, nominated by the university community at large, as well as four individual graduating students and faculty/staff members, who are recognized for their “outstanding contributions and service to the university,” Cooper said.
In addition, six awards representing excellent service from a student in each of SHSU’s colleges will be awarded, nominated strictly by members of the SHSU faculty within each student’s college.
Students nominated for individual awards must have a minimum overall grade point average of 2.5 and meet the minimum hours required for the class standings in which they are nominated.
Nomination forms, available online through the Student Activities website, at shsu.edu/studentactivities, should be returned to the Department of Student Activities, located in the Lowman Student Center Suite 328; through campus mail to SHSU Box 2507; or faxed to 936.294.3652.
The nomination deadline is 5 p.m. on Jan. 21.
"This is such a great time of year, when we are able to seek out those individual students and student organizations who have gone above and beyond for their university,” Cooper said.
“We encourage your participation and support of the Sammys,” he said. “It is a wonderful opportunity for all to recognize the amazing people SHSU has to offer.”
This year’s Sammy Awards ceremony will be held at 6 p.m. on April 17 in the Gaertner Performing Arts Center’s Payne Concert Hall.
Auditions for emcees will be held on Jan. 23, at 6 p.m. in the GPAC Concert Hall.

SMMC Director Named ‘Financial Counselor Of The Year’
Jacki Brossman-Ashorn, director of the Student Money Management Center, was recently recognized as “Financial Counselor of the Year” for 2012 by the Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education.
Brossman was presented the award on Nov. 16 during the annual AFCPE Conference in St. Louis, Mo.
The “Financial Counselor of the Year” award is given annually to an AFCPE member who has contributed outstanding work in the field of financial counseling, including a high level of outreach, evidence of exceptional outcomes and innovative approaches to counseling. The AFCPE is a national, non-profit, professional organization dedicated to educating, training and certifying financial counselors and educators.
Brossman was selected by a committee of AFCPE members as the recipient from more than 20 finalists who were nominated by their peers and leaders within the industry.
“Nominees include financial counselors from across the country who are associated not only with higher education such as Sam Houston, but also the private and public-sector, as well as governmental agencies and the military,” Brossman-Ashorn said. “It is a very prestigious award for someone in my job field.
“AFCPE is the gold standard in our industry,” she said. “It is the same organization by which our Student Money Management Center was recognized in 2011 as the ‘Outstanding Financial Counseling Center of the Year’ from among many well-known programs such as the University of North Texas and Texas Tech University, as well as many private and public-sector, governmental and military based financial counseling centers/programs.”
Counseling Students Collect, Stuff Stockings For Local Entities

Sam Houston State University’s Student Chapter of Christian Counselors embraced the spirit of giving for the holidays through a project that highlighted the work many of them did as part of their internship.
The master’s and doctoral students, as well as SHSU’s counseling program, presented stuffed green stockings of collected items to the SAAFE House and the Good Shepherd Mission, where many students choose to do their internships, according to Sheryl Serres, associate professor of counseling and adviser for the Student Chapter of Christian Counselors.
“The Student Chapter of Christian Counselors wanted a project that would address local needs,” she said. “Several master’s students in the counseling program choose to do their internships at the SAAFE House or the mission, so we were aware of the needs at these two facilities.”
For this year’s project, all counseling students were invited to join in filling stockings with things such as personal care items, small gifts, and candy, for a man, woman, teen, or child and return it to the department for distribution.
“Some persons spend Christmas at the SAAFE House and the mission, so this was a special gift for them,” Serres said. “The SAAFE House provides counseling and other services for women and children needed to leave domestic violence situations, and the mission houses persons seeking to overcome homelessness and substance abuse.
“It was very touching to see how students responded to this project,” she said. “At a time when they were busy with final projects and exams, they enthusiastically wanted to help.”
The Student Chapter of Christian Counselors conducts a service project each year for the holidays.
Past projects have included collecting canned goods for the mission and providing gift items to the Hospitality House in Huntsville.
The student organization of Christian Counselors is a division of the American Association of Christian Counselors and is an organization that promotes training opportunities for mental health care providers working with persons who seek out counseling.
Staff Council Spotlights Raven Nest Groundkeeper
Stephen Mansfield, greenskeeper at the Raven Nest Golf Club, was selected by the Sam Houston State University Staff Council as the December 2012 “Staff Spotlight.”
Mansfield has been working in maintenance and landscaping at the golf club for the past six years.
He said he enjoys the opportunity to work outdoors and to do such a wide variety of things to help Raven Nest be a top success.
As a groundskeeper, he has many diverse skills involving knowledge of machinery, biology, irrigation methods, fertilizing and maintaining the greens, landscaping and maintaining plants, and an understanding of the environment.
His particular knowledge of landscaping and gardening skills help in his work by maintaining many unique and beautiful garden and landscape features, he said.
Mansfield also said he feels that when one works hard and sets an example for others, it motivates them to do their best as well, and then all see and enjoy the rewards of excellence.
His wife Rozalynd is a professional artist and author and writes children’s fiction. His daughter Ilyana is also a professional artist and writer, building her portfolio for entering a top art and animation school.

In order to assist members of the Sam Houston State University community in publicizing events, the SHSU Communications Office (Today@Sam) is now requesting that students, faculty and staff submit information about events, accomplishments or ideas for feature stories online.
Submission criteria and guidelines, including deadlines, have now been placed online, at /guidelines.html. This information is also accessible through the “Submissions” link in the right-hand navigation on Today@Sam.
From there, those submitting ideas can access forms that will allow them to provide detailed information about their idea, as well as attach event calendars, vitas/resumes or photos, depending on the type of submission.
Ideas submitted to the SHSU Communications Office are directly utilized in several ways: as news stories, “slider” or SHSU home page stories, hometown releases, and on the Today@Sam calendar.
If your submission qualifies for distribution, we will either contact you for more detailed information, or we will edit the information using SHSU/journalistic style and forward the final release to the appropriate media.
