Festival Inspiración will encompass two-weeks of events in Huntsville that celebrate the Latin American culture through music, art, dance, language and literature.

The festival will consist of performances, workshops and master classes from guest artists and speakers from around the world, including Chile, Colombia, Puerto Rico and Cuba.

“My goal for Festival Inspiración this year is to bring the community and Hispanic culture together in one major event,” said event creator Sergio Ruiz, associate professor of piano at SHSU.

The Wynne Home Arts Center will kick off Festival Inspiración on March 4 with an opening reception and exhibit by Chilean artist Paula Vasquez from 4-7 p.m. From March 4-9, Vasquez will lead a series of workshops for adults and children. A free showing of the award-winning Mexican film “Like Water for Chocolate” will screen midweek in the Brown Wynne Gallery.

Headlining the festival concerts is Latin Grammy award-winning singer Lena Burke, who will perform a concert on March 8 at 7:30 p.m. in the James and Nancy Gaertner Performing Arts

Other artists featured in the festival will be concert pianists Washington Garcia, Mac McClure, Luis Marìn and mezzo soprano singer Marisa Martins in collaboration with music groups at SHSU.

Beginning March 11, the Wynne Home will present Art Break, a week-long arts and theater camp for children ages 6-14. The week will conclude with a Latin Arts Market and Celebration in downtown Huntsville on March 16 from noon to 9 p.m., which will include performances at Town Theater, games, vendor booths, arts and crafts, a magic show and live salsa music by Xtremo Norte.

Registration forms for classes and workshops and a full schedule will be available at www.thewynnehome.com. This portion of the festival is funded in part by an award from the National Endowment for The Arts, The Huntsville Arts Commission and Friends of the Wynne.

Now in its third year of celebrating Latin American culture through music, education and the arts, Festival Inspiración is a collaboration between Sam Houston State University, the City of Huntsville, Humanities Texas and the Wynne Home Arts Center.
