Annual Broadcast To Train Participants For Effective Leadership

This year at the Huntsville-Walker County Chick-fil-A Leadercast at Sam Houston State University, the theme is to learn to “simply lead."
SHSU’s third simulcast will be on May 10 in the James and Nancy Gaertner Performing Arts Center. Registration will begin at 7 a.m., followed by presentations from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Lunch will also be served during the event.
The event is a national simulcast, sponsored by Chick-fil-A and held in Atlanta. Broadcast to more than 600 other universities and corporations, it will bring an anticipated 125,000 people “training to be better leaders for tomorrow,” Johnson said. More than 800 students, faculty and citizens attended the event for Huntsville-Walker County last year. Johnson said they hope to top those numbers this year.
Cindy Truax, University Advancement director of annual giving, attends the leadercast each year. She said she hopes to see how the leadercast will encourage her to see the “big picture” of how to improve professionally and personally—a big picture that is “simple” compared to her busy life.
“The event is always motivational and thought-provoking,” Truax said. “We are so busy in our day-to-day lives, either working in our profession or ‘working’ in our personal lives. The Chick-fil-A leadercast gives you an opportunity to spend a day hearing from a variety of leaders—CEOs of companies, educators, government figures and athletes—that make you think about how you can do better in your own life, professionally and personally. The messages are about how to inspire change, how to motivate, and how to make a difference.”
With presentations from world-renowned leaders and public figures, the goal of the leadercast is to train participants to be the next great leaders, or to challenge them to be better in their current leadership positions—with an emphasis on how they can be a become a leader right here on campus, said Bearkat OneCard lead student assistant Michael Johnson.
“It is important that an event like the leadercast is held on campus because it is a central place that brings SHSU faculty, staff and students and leaders in Walker County together toward advancing our immediate community,” Johnson said. “It makes great sense that the City of Huntsville and Walker County embrace one of its greatest assets, SHSU, and it makes sense that SHSU extends a welcome to the communities that surrounds it. I hope this continues to build a close relationship between community leaders and SHSU.
The leadercast will include nine presentations by nationally and internationally recognized speakers, on a variety of topics regarding leadership, productivity, success and inspiration.
Speakers will include Condoleezza Rice, former Secretary of State and a part of a Simply Lead video interview; Sanya Richards-Ross, 2012 Olympic track and field gold medalist; Jack Welch, former chairman and CEO of General Electric; Mike Krzyzewski, head men’s basketball coach at Duke University and the United States Olympic team; Andy Stanley, best-selling leadership author and communicator; John C. Maxwell, best-selling author and leadership expert; Henry Cloud, best-selling author and leadership consultant; David Allen, best-selling author of “Getting Things Done” and productivity expert; and Lt. Cmdr. Rorke T. Denver, Navy SEAL and star of the 2012 movie “Act of Valor.”
While hearing from these speakers, listeners can expect to be “challenged, inspired and encouraged,” Johnson said.
“I'm hoping new ideas and opportunities to make a change for the better will be found through the words of the speakers’ presentations and that participants will benefit through networking with other participants and that through coming together, participants will see that they are a very important part of the Walker County and the SHSU community,” Johnson said.
Truax said that the event is an opportunity to refocus and simplify goals and ideas at work, church, in your family or in your classes.
“You have to recharge every now and then, and the leadercast can provide that inspiration to think of new possibilities or think about doing things a little differently,” Truax said. “Even if you hear something you have heard before, sometimes you need the message reinforced.”
Assistant vice president for Student Services and director of SHSU’s OneCard Services Kristy Vienne believes a program like the Chick-fil-A Leadercast helps people to visualize themselves as a successful leader.
“Most people don’t see themselves in that role, so a program of this caliber helps individuals to see that a leader is not someone who walks on water or is a typical CEO,” Vienne said. “We are all leaders and we all make choices that impact those around us. Whether we want to be or not, we need to learn to be the best leader that we can, that servant leader kind of role.”
