Conference To Bring Medieval, Renaissance Thoughts To Campus

Scholars from all over the world will "celebrate all things medieval and renaissance" when they converge at Sam Houston State University April 4-6 for the College of Humanities and Social Sciences’ first International Conference on Medieval and Renaissance Thought.

The interdisciplinary academic conference will include 60 paper presentations on emerging issues in Medieval and Renaissance studies from eight different disciplines, including linguistics concerns; historical, religious, and epistemological studies; gender issues; literature and culture; theoretical approaches to music and architecture; theology; law; art; philosophy; and explorations in the Viking Age.

Presentations will be held at the Katy and E. Don Walker, Sr., Education Center.

In addition to the presentations, the conference will be highlighted by a demonstration of the research capabilities of the Piers Plowman electronic archive by SHSU professor of English Robert Adams; a Shakespeare film hosted by SHSU professor of English Ralph Pease; and a panel discussion on “The Place of Medieval and Renaissance Scholarship in the Academy.”

There will also be a keynote address by Richard North, a renowned Anglo-Saxon literature expert and professor of Old English literature at University College in London.

North, who earned his doctorate from Cambridge University in England, teaches literature of all periods, primarily focusing on Old and Middle English and Old Icelandic.

His research interests include Anglo-Saxon paganism and is noted for his book on Beowulf that argues for a date and author’s name for the famous anonymous work, suggesting the epic poem was written by Abbot Eanmund of Breedon between the years AD 826-27 on the premise that this work was commissioned after the death of King Beornwulf of Mercia (823-6) by the latter’s would-be successor, an ealdorman named Wiglaf.

The cost to attend the conference is $75 for students and $125 for faculty, which includes admission to all sessions and the keynote address; a pre-conference social in Austin Hall; admission to a medieval and renaissance harp concert in the Peabody Library, two different Shakespeare films; a banquet; and a box lunch, compliments of Old Main Market.
