Money Management Center Hosts Financial Education Symposium

When students return to Sam Houston State University this week, they will find that a number of departments worked over the summer to continue to enhance students’ educational experiences beyond the classroom.

One of those offices, the Student Money Management Center, hosted the inaugural symposium for the Texas Association for Collegiate Financial Education Professionals in June.

“Texas is at the forefront of this new wave of student education and enlightenment,” said Patsy Collins, director of the center. “TACFEP is the first organization of its kind in the United States. The ultimate goal of TACFEP is to increase college students’ financial literacy and provide students with the necessary skill sets to become financially independent.”

The symposium brought together more than 60 financial educators, professionals, and students to facilitate collaboration, develop strategies, and increase the collective knowledge of the assembly.

During the two-day symposium, colleagues in their various fields of expertise discussed current major issues and trends confronting financial education professionals and students. Symposium topics included: Online Education & Tools, Workshop & Presentation Creation, Creating a Signature Financial Literacy Event, Training Counselors for Consultations, Peer to Peer Mentor Programs & Training, Changes in Financial Aid and How They Effect Students, and Reaching Emerging Student Populations.

Dottie Durband, the director of the “Red to Black” program at Texas Tech University was the dinner keynote speaker. Durband’s program is widely recognized as the first collegiate financial literacy program in Texas and one of the first in the nation.

Sam Houston State University, the University of North Texas, and Texas Tech University are the first three universities in the state to establish financial literacy programs. Kristy Vienne, assistant vice president for student services at Sam Houston State University, and Paul Goebel, of the University of North Texas, coordinated the inaugural event.

“The individuals in this field are very passionate about what they do,” Vienne said. “We needed an outlet where we could get together and share great ideas and programs that we are doing across the state of Texas.

“TACFEP professionals love working with students and we want to develop programs that they can enjoy, while learning information that they need to know for their future endeavors,” she said.
