Three SHSU Students Killed In Early-Morning Accident

Three Sam Houston State University students were killed and one was injured early Saturday morning in a single-car accident on campus.
The students who were killed in the crash have been identified as Blanca Espinal, 19, of Houston; Eric Torres, 22, of San Juan; and Alfonso Mata, 20, of Brownsville.
Thomas Roling, 23, of The Woodlands, was taken to Huntsville Memorial Hospital.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
SHSU President Dana Gibson issued the following statement: “Our Bearkat Family is deeply saddened by the loss of our students in this tragic accident. Our hearts go out to their family and friends during this difficult time.”
A vehicular accident with fatalities was reported at south Avenue I and Bowers Boulevard to the SHSU Police Department at 4:51 a.m. on Saturday (Dec. 14).
Students were notified of the accident and street closures via Katsafe at approximately 8 a.m., and the main routes into campus were reopened at approximately 9 a.m.
