Office To Host Study Abroad Informational Presentations

Though the fall semester is just beginning, SHSU’s Office of International Programs is already looking ahead to next summer, hosting a series of informational sessions to highlight the three different ways students can study abroad in 2014.

On Wednesday (Sept. 11), study abroad coordinator Jesse Starkey will share information on the OIP’s semester exchange programs from 3:45-4:45 p.m. in Lowman Student Center Room 306.

Among the topics that will be discussed are what exchange programs are available to students, how students receive credit for semester exchanges, how tuition and fees are paid, and scholarship and financial aid.

Through exchange programs, students spend one to three semesters abroad, usually with only one or two SHSU students participating in the program, and they attend classes taught by the host university but pay tuition to SHSU, according to Starkey.

SHSU currently has exchange partnerships with 14 universities in 11 different countries, all across the globe, including Albania, Chile, Finland, France, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Netherlands, Switzerland, Thailand and Turkey.

On Friday (Sept. 13), the office will provide general study abroad information—including application procedures and costs—during an event from 3:45-4:45 p.m. in LSC Room 306.

Finally, on Sept. 18, new summer faculty-led programs slated for 2014 will be announced during the “Faculty-Led Summer Programs Informational Event,” from 3:45-4:45 p.m. in LSC Room 306.

Faculty-led programs usually run for two to four weeks in the host country, students travel with a group of other SHSU students and an SHSU professor teaches the course.

There are usually 10-15 faculty led programs each summer—and for the first time this year, one during the winter break as well, which includes all of the exchange program countries, and “an almost indefinite number of programs through independent study abroad program providers that SHSU is affiliated with,” Starkey said.

“Faculty-led programs are a wonderful option for students who have never traveled abroad or are hesitant to commit to spending four to six months away from family and friends,” Starkey said. “By far, faculty led trips are the most popular here at SHSU, with about 150 students going abroad each summer.

“Additionally, traveling with other students and a faculty member provides a sense of community in an otherwise foreign environment,” she said. “Also, several of the colleges provide scholarships for students who participate in their programs, so often this is the most cost effective way for a student to get international experience.”

Between the three types of program options—faculty-led, exchange or independent—the OIP offers a program for any major, although some are more limited than others.

“The benefits of studying abroad are widespread, from broadening your global perspective and awareness of other cultures, to picking up a language, to adding a line to your resume or grad school application, to attending courses on content that you would not be able to receive here at SHSU,” Starkey said.
