Sam Houston Telly Award trophies

Sam Houston State University has received a number of awards this spring for projects promoting the university and several of its programs.

"There are many ongoing initiatives across campus that contribute to making our brand stronger, supporting the goals of enrollment, academics and advancement,” said SHSU President Dana Gibson. “No single individual, department or program is solely responsible for our success—it is truly a community effort."

These projects were coordinated or directed within the Division of University Advancement.

"This prestigious recognition from both inside and outside higher education is a validation of the high level of creativity and originality found in our marketing and communications, alumni, and development team,” said Frank Holmes, vice president for University Advancement. “It is a great honor to be a part of this commitment to excellence."

SHSU received three awards at the Council for the Advancement of Secondary Education District IV Conference, held in Fort Worth on March 24-26. CASE recognizes outstanding achievement in writing, editing, professional execution of publications, design, technical quality, creativity, and an array of other program elements.

The university won a “Gold Award” in the alumni program, project or special event category for its Life Member Celebration. In the social media integration category, SHSU received a “Bronze Award” for the “Instagram Sam” project. The university also received Honorable Mention for “A Celebration of Life: Fred Pirkle Memorial Book.”

CASE District IV represents almost 3,000 members from 261 institutions in Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.

The university was also recognized with several Telly Awards for the “SHSU Rodeo—Gangnam Style” video. These awards honor film and video productions, groundbreaking web commercials, videos and films, and outstanding local, regional and cable TV commercials and programs. The Telly Awards receives more than 13,000 entries annually from ad agencies, production companies, TV station, cable companies, interactive agencies and corporations in the world.

Sam Houston State won “Silver”—the highest Telly award—in three categories: low budget, recruitment and education. SHSU also won “Bronze” in two categories: education and viral.

The rodeo video also won a “Gold Award” in the Higher Ed Marketing Report’s 28th Annual Educational Advertising Awards Competition in the social media category. The university’s Heritage magazine won a “Merit Award” in the external publication category.

The Education Advertising Awards is the largest awards competition of its kind in the country.

This year, approximately 3,000 entries were received from more than 1,000 colleges, universities and secondary school from all 50 states and several foreign countries.
