�Enchanting Evening� To Support Theatre Scholarships

Sam Houston State University’s Department of Theatre and Musical Theatre invites guests to support performing arts students with a grand evening of musical cabaret as they host the 2013-2014 Scholarship Gala, “Some Enchanted Evening: The Songs of Rodgers and Hammerstein,” on Sept. 20.

The annual event, dedicated to the memory of long-time supporter and patron Ethel Nicholson, will kick off at 6 p.m. in the James and Nancy Gaertner Performing Arts Center, where guests will salute the legendary musical team of Rodgers and Hammerstein with unforgettable American show tunes and delectable hors d’oeuvres.

Among the more recent productions include "Waiting for Godot" (top), "Pirates of Penzance" (middle) and "Spring Awakening" (bottom).

Guest will also have the opportunity to participate in a live auction and silent auction with donated items including winery tour/tastings, sports packages, fine jewelry, Houston-area theatre tickets and a special one-week condominium stay at the destination of choice.

“The evening promises to be a fun event,” said Ronald Shields, dean of the College of Fine Arts and Mass Communication. “But the real joy and fulfillment is being able to put the funds raised back into the mission of supporting the great talents of our students.”

This year’s event honors the memory of Nicholson, a long-time patron of the arts and an enthusiastic supporter of SHSU’s theatre performances and students.

“She especially enjoyed our musicals,” said Penny Hasekoester, chair of the theatre and musical theatre department. “It seems fitting that we honor her with a gala whose music exemplifies the best of the musical theatre genre.”

SHSU’s Department of Theatre and Musical Theatre Bachelor of Fine Arts programs develop outstanding theatre artists with the professional skills, intellectual vigor, and creative resources necessary to excel and thrive in the performing arts of the 21st century, according to Hasekoester.

The annual scholarship gala provides student scholarships for theatre and musical theatre students.

“Much of the departments’ success lies in the ability to attract and retain some of the best talent in this region by providing much needed scholarship opportunities,” Hasekoester said.

Tickets are $50 per person and $30 for parents of SHSU theatre and musical theatre students and theatre alumni.
