Vocal students from SHSU’s School of Music, accompanied by Opera Workshop director Rebecca Grimes, were recently recognized at the National Association of Teachers of Singing Regional Conference held Nov. 7-9 at Baylor School of Music.

The National Association of Teachers of Singing is the largest association of teachers of singing in the world and boasts more than 6,500 members.

One of the organization's most widely recognized activities is the student audition competition held in conjunction with each of the regional conferences, according to Grimes.

Of the 17 SHSU students who competed in the auditions, 13 made the semifinals and three advanced to the finals, where the top five singers competed.

Ardeen Pierre, a student of associate professor of voice Christopher Michel, won her division; Lindsey Fuson, also a student of Michel, was awarded with fourth place in the graduate division; and John Jermain, a student of voice instructor Nicole Franklin, received fifth place.

Semifinalists from SHSU included Stephanie Clark, Jason Hesslein, Colton Houston, Bailey Turner, Sarah Garcia, Nicole Wallace, Rachel Harston, Rachel Williams, Myah Lerch and Nick Szoeke.

“This is an outstanding accomplishment for our students and music faculty,” said Ronald E. Shields, dean of the College of Fine Arts and Mass Communication. “These students competed against hundreds of other talented singers from across Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico.

“This accomplishment is one strong external measure as to the quality of our students, voice instruction and collaborative piano in the SHSU School of Music.”

The competition included more than 50 regional universities, such as Baylor University, Oklahoma State University, Southern Methodist University, Southwestern University, Stephen F. Austin State University, Texas A&M Commerce, Texas Christian University, Texas Tech University and University of New Mexico.
