For the fifth consecutive year, Sam Houston State University has been named one of the best colleges in the nation to work for, according to a new survey by The Chronicle of Higher Education.

The results, released in The Chronicle’s seventh annual report on The Academic Workplace, are based on a survey of more than 43,000 employees at 278 colleges and universities.

In all, only 92 of the 278 institutions achieved “Great College to Work For” recognition for specific best practices and policies. Results are reported for small, medium and large institutions, with SHSU included among the large universities with 10,000 or more students.

SHSU won honors in several categories including: Collaborative Governance; Facilities, Workspace and Security; Job Satisfaction; Professional/Career Development Programs; Respect and Appreciation; and Work/Life Balance.

The university was also included among 42 institutions in the Great Colleges to Work For “Honor Roll,” which highlights colleges and universities that earned the most recognition in their size categories.

“Our faculty and staff are committed to excellence, and their enthusiasm for the work that they do at all levels is contagious,” said SHSU President Dana Gibson. “Their dedication supports our students as they work toward their goals in academics, athletics, student organizations, leadership, internships and research.

“The results of the survey reflect the efforts of our employees who are committed to the mission of SHSU and strive daily to make the university a wonderful place to work,” she said.

The survey results are based on a two-part assessment process: an institutional audit that captured demographics and workplace policies from each institution, and a survey administered to faculty, administrators and professional support staff. The primary factor in deciding whether an institution received recognition is the employee feedback.

To administer the survey and analyze the results, The Chronicle worked with ModernThink, LLC, a strategic human capital consulting firm that has conducted numerous “Best Places to Work” programs.
