Career Week To Give CJ Students Job-Finding Opportunities

Students talk with representatives from the San Antonio Police Department (above) and the FBI (below) during the 2013 Criminal Justice Job Fair. Many federal, state and local agencies, as well as private companies, will be on hand for this year's event, on March 5.

The College of Criminal Justice will assist students with many of the CJ-related employment process steps, from resumes and interviewing skills to polygraph exams and finding the right employer during a series of workshops for Career Week, March 3-6.

Career Week will kick off on Monday (March 3) with a resume-writing workshop at 2 p.m. in the Criminal Justice Center’s Hazel B. Kerper Courtroom.

Richard and Michelle Meers, a career counselor with SHSU’s Career Services, will review the key elements of a good resume, as well as how to use various experiences, such as jobs, volunteer positions, awards and activities, to put your best foot forward.

“Students are encouraged to utilize the services provided by Career Services at Sam Houston State University in preparation of obtaining a satisfying career as they enter the workforce,” said Vanessa Richard, College of Criminal Justice career coordinator.

On Tuesday (March 4), the college will host polygraph examiner and SHSU alumnus Jerry Thomas, from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, who will explain the “lie detector” exam used in the hiring process for many criminal justice and security positions, beginning at 2 p.m. in the Kerper Courtroom.

The exam, which includes a series of questions, measures several physiological responses, such as blood pressure, pulse, respiration and skin conductivity. Thomas will discuss the steps in the process to better prepare students for the experience.

The week’s highlight will be the CJ Career Fair, featuring dozens of agencies in law enforcement, corrections, victim services, forensics and private security, on Wednesday (March 5), from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Lowman Student Center Ballroom.

The fair includes representatives from private companies and many federal, state, and local agencies, many of which have open positions or internship opportunities, providing SHSU students and alumni the opportunity to have face-to-face discussions with key hiring personnel.

Among those who have signed up are the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (Houston); U.S. Secret Service; Texas Department of Public Safety; police departments in Texas’s major metropolitan areas; the Harris and Montgomery county sheriff’s offices; and Texas Department of Criminal Justice and Federal Bureau of Prisons.

In addition, probation and parole entities from around the state; the U.S. Marine Corps and Army; private security agencies such as Photofax and Walmart Logistics; the Texas Health and Human Services; and the Houston Fire Department will also be on hand to talk with students and alumni.

Students are encouraged to dress professionally, bring copies of their resumes and research the companies attending.

Last year, more than 50 employers attended the event.

Finally, on Thursday (March 6), students can learn about the interviewing process from professionals in the field who make critical hiring decisions during an interviewing skills panel at 2 p.m. in the Kerper Courtroom.

The panelists will include representatives from the federal, state and local levels, such as alumna Nancy Kratzer, former deputy special agent in charge of Homeland Security Investigations in Dallas, and Ed Reyna, former head of the U.S. Probation/Pretrial Services Office for the Northern District of Texas.

“All of these events are tailored to enhancing students’ job search,” said Kalyn Cavazos, CJ advising specialist. “You will want to take advantage of these opportunities offered during Career Week.”
