The American Bar Association has declared the third week in October as Mediation Week, and the Association of Conflict Resolution marks Oct. 16 as Conflict Resolution Day.
Following this spirit of raising awareness for mediation and dispute resolution techniques, the Sam Houston State University Office of Student Legal and Mediation Services will host a series of informative presentations on both the main and Woodlands Center campuses for Conflict Resolution Week, Oct. 13-15.
The SLMS office, in an effort to equip the SHSU community with useful insights and tools to effectively resolve disputes, will deliver a lineup of speakers and presentations concerning conflict resolution in a wide array of environments and situations.
“It seems that conflict is inevitable within any relationship or community— friends, roommates, coworkers, and even governments,” said Gene Roberts, director of Student Legal and Mediation Services. “The key is having the knowledge and tools to address conflict in a healthy and productive way, and that is what our office hopes to provide with this lineup of informative and dynamic speakers.”
The series will begin on Monday, when from 2-2:50 p.m. in Lowman Student Center Room 320, associate vice president of Human Resources and Risk Management Dave Hammonds will lead a discussion on resolving conflict in the workplace.
Later that evening, Martin Ebel, deputy director of the Houston district office of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, will address methods for resolving conflict within the working environment, at 6 p.m. in The Woodlands Center Room 110.
On Tuesday, director for leadership initiatives at SHSU Angie Taylor will bring her knowledge as coordinator for student organizations to discuss how to resolve conflict when it arises in our various student/professional/social organizations and associations.
Her presentation will begin at 10 a.m. in LSC Room 320.
From 3:30-4:20 p.m., also in LSC Room 320, Wayne Bennett, assistant director of Student Discipline and Risk Management, will be lead an exploration into how students might resolve conflict with their roommates.
Wednesday’s activities will kick off at 10 a.m. in LSC Room 304, where Drew Miller, executive director for Counseling and Health Services, will share methods for resolving conflict within diverse populations.
Closing out Conflict Resolution Week will be special guest Adam McGough, who serves as the chief of staff to the mayor of Dallas, who will offer “what will certainly be an enlightening discussion” on the process of conflict resolution within our government, according to Roberts.
His talk will begin at noon in LSC Room 320.
McGough’s wealth of experience in mediation, dispute resolution, and the day-to-day operations of our government is sure to provide valuable wisdom and techniques that can be applied to resolving conflict in a variety of situations, according to Roberts.
“What our series of presenters and speakers displays is that the need to employ effective conflict resolution techniques is vital in not just some areas of our lives but in virtually every environment in which we find ourselves working, living, and getting along with other human beings,” said Roberts, who is also the president of the Texas Association of Mediators and serves on the Council of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Section for the State Bar of Texas.
“Our hope is that this year’s attendees with new ideas, tools, and maxims that they can take with them and use to create better, stronger relationships with their coworkers, classmates, roommates, family members, and friends.”
