Sam Houston State University’s Recreational Sports department will go “orange” during the annual Earth Week celebration, April 14-22.
The “Orange is the new Green” celebration will work to increase environmental awareness among students, faculty and staff members through various activities, workshops and trips.
“Earth Week is about an overall awareness of how we utilize resources and impact our environment,” said Melissa Fadler, associate director of recreational sports. “From how much money we spend on paper, to where we get our nutrition, we can all take a small piece of information we learn during this week to make individual choices that impact our daily lives.”
The week will began on Monday (April 14) with a “Kickoff on the Mall” from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., during which students can learn about upcoming Earth Week events, a few energy saving tips and tricks, and can sign up for the workshops and trips being held throughout the week.
On Tuesday (April 15), students, faculty and staff can learn to shrink their carbon footprint by choosing an alternate means of transportation for “Walk, Bike or Carpool to Campus Day.”
The event will include three, one-hour sessions with members of the Department of Public Safety Services and university police, who will discuss bicycle traffic laws, bike safety and proper bike maintenance. The clinics will be offered from 1:30-2:30 p.m., 2:45-3:45 p.m., and 4-5 p.m. in the Recreational Sports Center.
“This is the first year the Department of Public Safety Services has participated in ‘Orange is the new Green’ and since parking and transportation is a division of DPS, it made sense to find a way that our department can help make a positive impact on the environment,” said Matthew McDaniel, assistant director of parking and transportation. “Thinking green, or orange in our case, is just one solution to help parking efficiency and promote wellness on campus.”
Later that day, students can take a breather from classes and term papers and enjoy the fresh spring air during “Fresh Air Yoga” from 6-7 p.m. There will also be a session on Thursday (April 17) from 7-8 p.m. All interested students will first meet in RSC Multi-Purpose Room No. 2.
On Wednesday (April 16), from 12:30-5 p.m., students can try their hand at organic farming during the “Far Out Farms Service Project,” where they will learn about planting crops, breeding and caring for farm animals, and the benefits of organic farming and buying local.
Transportation will be provided for the event, but spots are limited to those who sign up during Monday kickoff or at the Center for Leadership and Service, in Lowman Student Center Suite 324.
The interactive “Leave No Trace” workshop on Wednesday evening also will teach students to make good decisions when it comes to the environment and the world around them. That event will be from 6-7 p.m. at the RSC Outdoor Rental Building.
“We want to educate students, faculty, and staff on ways they can bring sustainable practices into their daily lives,” said Kathryn Kuczaj, traditions camp and outdoor coordinator. “If we can at least plant that seed in people on campus by educating them on why this is important, then hopefully we will see not only a greener SHSU, but a green society as the students graduate.”
On Thursday (April 17), from 3-5 p.m., students can meet local designer, builder and head of Phoenix Commotion Dan Phillips, who will share information on his local projects, which incorporate recycled and eco-friendly materials; how to positively affect the environment; and tour Phillips’s Bone House and Tree House.
Events continue over the weekend with “P, B, & J Cigarette Waste Brigade” on Saturday (April 19) from 10 a.m. to noon, during which students can join members of Plastic, Bottles & Junk as they clean up and collect cigarette butts on campus.
On Monday (April 21) students can plant their own flowers during the “Take Home Your Own Piece of Earth Flower Giveaway” event at 11 a.m. in the LSC Mall Area.
Finally, on Tuesday, the final day of Earth Week, students can learn about a variety of nutrition topics during the “Earth Day Student Nutrition Fair” from 9:30-11 a.m. at Old Main Market.
Immediately following the nutrition fair, P, B & J will hand out free water bottles in the LSC Mall Area, courtesy of the LSC, and can head inside to fill them up at one of the hydration stations.
“There are numerous benefits to ‘going green’ that will be highlighted throughout the different programs,” Kuczaj said. “There are financial benefits, health benefits and social benefits that can be achieved simply by being educated and adopting a few sustainable practices.”
