With the death of the first Ebola patient in Texas and growing discussion in the news over the potential for the disease to spread into an Africa-like pandemic, Sam Houston State University’s health service and promotion department will explore the state’s Ebola “readiness” with a special guest lecturer on Thursday (Oct. 16).
Dr. James Mobley, Local Health Authority for San Patricio County, will discuss “Ebola in Texas: Are We Ready?” an update on the first Ebola case diagnosed in the United States.
His presentation will begin at 4 p.m. in the Smith-Hutson Business Building’s Haney Auditorium, in Room 186.
Mobley’s discussion will examine the intricacies of the disease, including what the disease is; its cause and probable mode of transmission; health care universal precautions to protect patients and avoid direct contact with infectious agents; and the disease surveillance and response readiness of the public health system in Texas.
“The Ebola situation is changing everyday, the outbreak is not contained in West Africa, and both health providers and people who have been in contact with Ebola patients are traveling to multiple destinations worldwide,” said Miguel Zuniga, SHSU health services and promotion department chair.
“The general public is learning about the situation from the news media, a source that may not have the most accurate information to educate the public,” he said. “This lecture is an opportunity to hear from a Local Health Authority who is appraised daily on the status of the situation in Texas.”
