SHSU Rewarded For Energy Efficiency

Sam Houston State University has been recognized for continued success in energy efficiency improvements.

Campus officials accepted a check last month for $104,842 in cash incentives the university earned through its participation in the Entergy Texas SCORE Program in 2013. The incentive represents another achievement in the SHSU’s long-standing involvement in the program. Since joining SCORE in 2009, SHSU has earned $261,892 in incentives.

The SCORE Program provides energy performance benchmarking, technical assistance and cash incentives to help schools save energy and money.

“Energy conservation is important for everyone. The energy savings allows SHSU to spend our limited resources on other initiatives,” said SHSU President Dana Gibson.

The university plans to use the cash incentives for additional improvements, which will result in future energy savings.

“We are putting together information for Phase III Energy Savings Project,” said SHSU Energy Manager Sandra Gray. “This phase will consist of adding controls that will automate the operation of the building heat and cooling systems and possibly recommission several buildings. Also, Residence Life is installing new LED lighting in the Sam Houston Village parking garage.”

The university has significantly reduced its energy usage through various projects—including updating its lighting and HVAC systems. In total, since 2009 SHSU has slashed 5,084,917 kilowatt-hours of energy annually, equal to the carbon dioxide emissions from the 402,204 gallons of gasoline, according to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency calculations.

“Now more than ever, it’s vital our schools have the resources they need to implement energy efficiency improvements in their facilities,” said Entergy Texas Customer Service Manager Stan Foley. “These projects are exactly the type of energy-saving projects the SCORE Program was created to encourage.”
