Fall Comedy Event To Showcase Judah Friedlander, Nick Swardson

Actors and standup comedians Judah Friedlander and Nick Swardson will stop by Sam Houston State University to welcome students back to campus as part of the Kat Comedy Showcase on Aug. 25.

Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum doors will open for the Welcome Week event at 7 p.m., with the show scheduled to begin at 8 p.m.

Friedlander, who is most well known as the trucker-hat-donning Frank Rossitano on NBC’s “30 Rock,” started doing stand-up in 1989.

He has more than 50 TV and movies credits but has made stand-up comedy his priority and specialty, continuing to routinely perform on stages across the country. Next year, Friedlander’s new stand-up album and stand-up concert movie will be released.

“Judah Friedlander is known to comics and audiences as one of the funniest and most original stand-up comedians,” said Steven Begnaud, program coordinator for SHSU’s Department of Student Activities. “Seeing Judah perform live is always a unique experience. He always has new jokes and he plays off the audience making up jokes on the spot. You will never see Judah do the same show twice.

“He is not an actor who does stand-up on the side; he’s a stand-up comedian who acts on the side,” Begnaud said.

Swardson is known in the Hollywood and comedy worlds as a triple threat, having succeeded as a comedian, actor and writer/producer.

After first striking feature success as the writer of “Malibu’s Most Wanted,” starring Jamie Kennedy, Swardson caught the attention of Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions and quickly became a fixture in the company. He has written, produced or co-produced such projects as “Grandma’s Boy,” “Benchwarmers” and “I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry,” featuring Sandler and Kevin James.

In addition, he co-created and starred in the TV series “Pretend Time” and completed a role in “Grown Ups 2” in 2013.

It is these reputations that made Friedlander and Swardson the ideal picks to headline the Kat Comedy Showcase this fall, Begnaud said.

“Nick Swardson was someone we wanted to bring in the past, due to his great stand-up, and finally this year we are able to book him,” he said. “We booked Judah because he is very engaging with the audience and puts on great shows.”

Sam Houston State University students, faculty and staff can obtain two free tickets to the show, with their Bearkat OneCard, at 936.294.3021 or by visiting Johnson Coliseum Box Office No. 2.

Additional tickets may become available to the public for $20.

SHSU’s Kat Comedy Showcase, an event closely related to Sammypalooza, is in its fourth installment.

The showcase regularly brings in around 4,000 students every year, and this year’s show is expected to sell out quickly.
