Office Awards Research Grants To 21 SHSU Professors

Twenty-one faculty members have been awarded $200,000 in research funding during the 2014 fiscal year thanks to the Internal Grant Program, overseen by the Sam Houston State University Office of Research and Sponsored Programs.

The Internal Grant Program is designed to support faculty research activities without using departmental funds.

“These grants are responsible for many of our faculty being able to take part in scholarly activities that further their professional career,” said Jerry Cook, associate vice president for Research and Sponsored Programs. “In the past, many great projects have been initiated with these funds and then have moved on to bring external funding back to the university.”

Since 2003, SHSU has committed more than $2 million to research and scholarly pursuits of university faculty through the Internal Grant Program. It has been an instrumental part in moving SHSU to the nation’s forefront in biology and forensic research, according to Cook.

“The Internal Grant Program continues to be a great investment in the future of the SHSU research community,” he said. “We are excited for this year’s recipients and the potential of their research projects.”

Members of the Faculty Research Council, comprising nine SHSU faculty members, reviewed each application received. Each candidate applied for one of two types of awards: an enhancement research grant or a faculty research grant.

The enhancement research grant is designed to allow faculty to continue a project beyond the designated timeline with additional funding from external resources.

This year, 11 applicants received the enhancement research grant, a $10,000-$15,000 award, with which they have one year to complete their research and file a final report with ORSP.

They are then required to submit at least one grant proposal to an external organization.

The faculty research grant was awarded to 10 faculty members who each received $5,000 to fund their proposal.

Recipients are given three months during the summer to complete a scholarly project that contributes to the general knowledge of their focused discipline. They, too, are required to submit a final report to ORSP at the end of their project.
