The Sam Houston State University sport management program will host “SHSU Night with the Houston Rockets” at Houston’s Toyota Center on April 12.

Students, faculty, staff and alumni are invited to join in on the fun as the Rockets take on the New Orleans Pelicans at 7 p.m. that Saturday for the last weekend game of the regular season.

“We are excited to be partnering with the Rockets for our event this year,” said Ryan Zapalac, associate professor in the health and kinesiology department. “The Rockets provide us with a new premier partner that will only help make the event better for all of those who attend.

“They have also provided our students with incredible access to many different benefits to help make the night extra special,” he said. “Last year we drew more than 1,000 Bearkat faithful to the Aeros game and are hoping to draw even more this year.”

Students attending the game will receive a pregame meal, sponsored by Student Activities, at the Lake House Restaurant located at Discovery Green near Toyota Center. There are a limited number of spaces available.

In addition, event sponsors and alumni who purchase designated blocks of tickets will be invited to take part in a VIP event from 5:30-7 p.m. in the 94-95 Room at Toyota Center. Provost Jaimie Hebert and head football coach K.C. Keeler will be the featured SHSU guests at the event, sponsored by the College of Health Sciences, Student Services and Huntsville Memorial Hospital, and will be giving out the 2014 Industry Impact Awards.

After the final buzzer of the game, all SHSU attendees will have the opportunity to get on the home court of the Rockets and shoot free throws.

Everyone is encouraged to show off his or her Bearkat pride at the event by wearing SHSU attire. There will also be a limited number of giveaways for SHSU attendees.

Discount tickets will be available at three price levels for Bearkats: $20 tickets in the upper end zone, which are almost sold out; and at $30 and $55, with seats still available.

Tickets can be purchased online at rockets.com/promocode with one of the following codes: SAM, SHSU, KATS or DUNK.

This is the first year the Rockets will be partners for the event, as the Houston Aeros (now the Des Moines Wild) were partners from 2011-2013.

“The Rockets have worked with us to make the evening a great experience,” said associate professor of sport management Brent Estes. “Faculty, staff, students and alumni will have a great night, and there is something for everyone at this event. We hope to cover the seats in Bearkat Orange, and we know that SHSU will have another great turnout at the game.”

Registration for the student pre-game meal and for the VIP event is available at shsurockets.blogspot.com.

Student organizations that want to bring letters or signs to the game need to make a group ticket purchase and should contact Jarred Gibson or Billy Ukrazhenko to schedule getting the items into the game, as the Rockets have more stringent regulations on what can be brought into the facility than did the Aeros in previous years, Zapalac said.

For more information, contact Tori Benavidez, at vlb006@shsu.edu; Gibson, at jeg019@shsu.com; or Ukrazhenko, at billyu54@shsu.edu or visit the “SHSU Night with the Rockets” website at shsurockets.blogspot.com.
