ROTC Graduates Four Second Lieutenants

Four summer graduates received both their degrees and ranks in the U.S. Army on Aug. 1 during the Sam Houston State University Department of Military Science’s Bearkat Battalion Commissioning Ceremony.

The three commissioned include Keith Golightly, Torey Melofsky and Sandra Servin. Also recognized was Rosalba Chavez, who was commissioned this summer during training at Ft. Knox, Kentucky.

Golightly, from Grand Prairie, joined the ROTC program in the fall 2010 semester as a three-year Army ROTC scholarship recipient.

In addition to serving in numerous leadership positions, he was a member of the Ranger Challenge Team, Rifle Team and Schuder’s Rangers and attended the Association of United States Army Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C.

A multiple dean’s list recipient, Golightly graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice and minor in military science.

He received a reserve duty commission as a military intelligence officer with the Military Intelligence Readiness Command in Fort Worth.

Melofsky, from The Woodlands, enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve in 2011 and served with the 420th Engineer Brigade HHC in Bryan before joining the ROTC program that fall, serving as a Simultaneous Membership Program cadet with the 451st Area Clearance Platoon in Conroe.

In addition to the many leadership positions in which he served, he was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity and the Golden Key International Honour Society and made the dean’s list and president’s honor roll several semesters.

Melofsky graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration and a minor in military science. He received an active duty commission with the Corps of Engineers.

A Houston native, Servin joined the Bearkat Battalion in 2010 as the recipient of a four-year Army ROTC scholarship. She also enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve and serves with the 302nd MP Company in Huntsville.

While participating in several leadership positions with ROTC, she also was also a member of the lacrosse team in 2012, a member of the ROTC Cannon Crew and was an intramural sports athlete.

Servin graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in criminal justice and a minor in military science. She received a reserve duty commission as a quartermaster officer.

Chavez, from Kerrville, joined the Bearkat Battalion in 2012 as a Simultaneous Membership Program cadet with the 158th Aviation Regiment in Conroe.

Before coming to SHSU, she served for 14 years in the military in duty stations around the world, including Camp Liberty, Iraq; Camp Arifjan, Kuwait; and Kabul, Afghanistan as part of operations Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom and New Dawn, and Iraqi Freedom.

In addition to her leadership skills and extracurricular activities within the Bearkat Battalion, Chavez was recognized with the Battalion Commander’s Military Award, ROTC Honors Award and Gold Medal Athlete Award. She is the previous recipient of numerous service medals, including, but not limited to, two Meritorious Service Medals, an Afghanistan Campaign Medal, three Army Accommodation Medals, and an Iraq Campaign Medal.

She also was a member of Golden Key International Honour Society and a multiple dean’s list recipient.

Chavez earned a Bachelor of Science degree in general studies.
