Wiz Khalifa, Capital Cities To Headline Spring Sammypalooza

The Sam Houston State University Student Activities Department has announced today that Capital Cities and Wiz Khalifa will perform on campus as the spring Sammypalooza series artists on March 26.

The concert, which is free for SHSU students, will begin at 8 p.m., with doors opening at 7 p.m., at the Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.

Tickets will be available on Wednesday (March 5) at noon and each SHSU student, and faculty and staff member, with an active BearkatOne card will be allowed to receive up two free tickets.

“The Sammypalooza (concert series) is returning for the first time since August 2012, and with this lineup, it is sure to sellout,” said Steven Begnaud, Student Activities program coordinator. “Sammypalooza is designed to bring musical talent to the students at Sam Houston State University free of charge and put on a high-quality, entertaining show for the students to enjoy.”

Rapper Wiz Khalifa was selected by popular vote from a poll taken in October as students’ first choice to headline Sammypalooza.

Khalifa entered the music scene after high school, releasing his first mixed tape “Prince of the City: Welcome to Pistolvania” in 2005.

The mixed tape was soon accepted by fans and began to gain buzz outside of his home of Pittsburgh, and he soon released “Show and Prove,” which was called “arguably the best album of the year” by Okayplayer.com.

His first Atlantic Records release, “Black and Yellow,” quickly gained 3 million views on YouTube and was nominated for two Grammy awards. He has since received three other Grammy nominations; and won a BET Award for “Best New Artist” in 2011 and a Billboard Music Award for “Top New Artist” in 2012.

In recent years, Khalifa has found himself being recognized by a multitude of rap veterans, including Rick Ross and Diddy.

Capital Cities was selected to perform largely due to their international stardom and their famous single, according to Begnaud.

The Los Angeles duo of Ryan Merchant and Sebu Simonian initially met on Craigslist in 2008 and worked as jingle writers until they formed the indie-electro band Capital Cities in 2010.

In 2011, they released an independent EP that included the song “Safe and Sound,” an upbeat mesh of synths and melody that spread like wildfire across the Internet.

Encouraged by the experience, the band self-funded a promotional campaign and got on the radio in the states.

Soon after, the music industry and the rest of the world took notice and the duo was signed by Capitol Records’s indie label “Lazy Hooks” and released the band’s debut album “In A Tidal Wave of Mystery” in June 2013.

“Safe and Sound” went multi-platinum and the music video received Video Music Award and Grammy nominations.

The song went on to achieve a No. 1 position on the U.S. alternative charts, No. 2 on the U.S. rock charts, and No. 8 on the U.S. combined music charts. It also reached No. 1 in Germany, No. 2 in Austria, No. 4 in Italy, and No. 5 in Canada.

Following Sammypalooza, Capital Cities will perform at Lollapalooza Chile on March 29.
