Sam Houston State University’s Division of Student Services and College of Education will join together this October to present “Careers in Student Affairs” month.

Careers in Student Affairs month provides an opportunity for students and staff to explore the options available in the fields of campus life and higher education administration, according to associate director for Leadership Initiatives Meredith Conrey.

Unlike other academic programs, student affairs does not have a traditional undergraduate curriculum to prepare students to enter the field. Alternatively, hands-on experience such as employment, mentorship and leadership opportunities will inform students about the viability of a career in student affairs.

“When you ask a child what they want to be when they grow up, you rarely hear ‘I want to work at a college or university,’” Conrey said. “The field of student affairs does not readily appear as an option for students until they engage in the collegiate experience.”

The events schedule includes several seminars and webinars that will provide information about various aspects of student affairs.

“Student Affairs: An Overview of the Profession” will give students a holistic view of the field. The presentation, held on Wednesday (Oct. 8) at 4 p.m. in the Lowman Student Center Room 315, will provide information about the various functional areas that make up student affairs.

Students will learn how jobs are structured in a college and university setting, and why professionals love to work in student affairs. Attendees will also learn how different offices—such as Residence Life, Student Activities and Recreational Sports—contribute to life on campus.

“Grad School 101: Exploring Student Affairs,” held on Wednesday (Oct. 15) at 4 p.m. in the LSC Room 315, will provide valuable information about how to research, apply, interview, and prepare for a graduate program.

“This is important, as the traditional route into student affairs often requires graduate preparation,” Conrey said.

Attendees will learn tips on writing a statement of purpose, pursuing a graduate assistantship, and types of graduate programs.

The Student Affairs Professionals Panel on Thursday (Oct. 16), at 4 p.m. in the LSC Room 304, will provide students with an opportunity to hear about careers in student affairs from professionals in the field. Attendees will hear from panelists who are new to the profession and from those who are more seasoned in their career.

The panel will me followed by a meet and greet social, during which students will have the opportunity to mix and mingle with the panelists and other student affairs professionals from SHSU.

“Student Affairs Involvement at the Undergraduate Level” will be held on Thursday (Oct. 23) at 4 p.m. in LSC Room 302.

This final event of Careers on Student Affairs Month will cover ways in which students can be involved in student affairs while pursuing their undergraduate degree. Attendees will learn information about on-campus student employment, conference experiences, mentoring programs, and shadowing opportunities.

In addition to these on-campus events, the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators—one of the national organizations for the student affairs in higher education profession—will provide eight unique educational webinars during October.
