Attorney To Discuss Human Trafficking At The Woodlands Center

Ruben Perez, assistant attorney and chief for the U.S. Department of Justice’s southern district of Texas, will speak about his work with the civil rights and human trafficking unit and the effects of human trafficking on Houston and the surrounding areas on Feb. 18.

The SHSU–The Woodlands Center Speaker Series presentation will be held from 6-7 p.m. in TWC Auditorium, in Room 110.

Perez has served as an assistant United States attorney since 1992.

From 1992-1997, he was assigned to the organized crime drug enforcement task force, with which he prosecuted international crime organizations trafficking in large-scale quantities of narcotics and money laundering.

In 1999 he was assigned to the civil rights unit. He now serves as chief of the unit, for which he is responsible for the investigation and prosecution of federal civil rights violations, including bias-motivated hate crimes, human trafficking and law enforcement misconduct.

With the unit, Perez has successfully investigated and prosecuted several high-profile cases. He also has received numerous civic and professional awards for his work in coordinating the Human Trafficking Rescue Alliance and commendations from the United States Attorney, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Perez has served as an instructor for the Department of Justice Criminal Trial Advocacy Program; has taught human trafficking classes internationally; and often speaks at law enforcement seminars, area schools and universities.

“Perez’s prosecutorial history in human trafficking uniquely qualifies him to speak to us about his experiences and inform us about the severity of this issue,” said Janet Mullings, executive director of The Woodlands Center. “His presentation will enlighten students regarding the severity of human trafficking in our own backyard.

The Woodlands Center Speaker Series is among several new programs that will be launched this year in an effort to enrich the TWC academic experience, according to Mullings.

“As our numbers grow, more students are not traveling to main campus and are in need of the same environment the students in Huntsville receive,” she said. “Having a speaker series at The Woodlands Center allows these students the same opportunities for professional development that are afforded to students in Huntsville.”

The presentation is open to the public, and a reception will follow.
