Student Government To Host Black History Month Program

The Student Government Association is teaming up with NAACP Unit 6816 to present their second annual Black History Month program “A Celebration Through Speech, Song and Dance” on Wednesday (Feb. 11) at 7 p.m.

The program, held in the Lowman Student Center Ballroom, commemorates the achievements of the African-American community and celebrates black culture.

The event will include performances by the Fade to Black dance team, the Greater Zion Missionary Baptist Church’s choirs and drill team; Rashad Brown, and “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” performed by SHSU alumna Diane Patrick.

“Our Black History Month program committee is composed of members from several campus organizations involved with the program,” said Troy Ross, caucus chair for the College of Crimal Justice. “We voted on possible performers and invited them to come out and be a part of the program.”

Guests will also hear from Bernadette Pruitt, associate professor of history at Sam Houston State University; and Terry Williams, former president of the SHSU Alumni Association.

A slideshow presentation will highlight African-American students, faculty, staff and alumni of SHSU.

“This program is a great way to kick off Black History Month, and it also gives students an opportunity to watch their fellow Bearkats showcase the great talent on our campus,” said Ross.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free.

Trumpet Students To Perform Timeless Pieces

Trumpet students will perform during two trumpet studio recitals on Monday (Feb. 9) in the Gaertner Performing Arts Center Concert Hall.

Freshman and sophomore students will perform trumpet solos, accompanied by piano, in “The Early Show,” beginning at 6 p.m.

“The Late Show” will begin at 7:30 p.m. and will feature performances by upperclassmen.

Some pieces to be performed include classic trumpet solos like the “Haydn Concerto,” “Kennan Sonata,” “Goedicke Concert Etude,” and many other works from composers from the 1600s through the 20th century.

“It’s a great variety of music and all of the students have worked very hard since November to prepare for their performances,” said Randy Adams, professor of trumpet at Sam Houston State University.

Admission to both performances is free, and both are open to the public.

For more information, contact Adams at 936.294.1359.

Sinfonietta To Hold Inaugural Concert

The Sam Houston Sinfonietta will hold its inaugural concert Tuesday (Feb. 10) at 7:30 p.m. in the Gaertner Performing Arts Center Recital Hall.

The sinfonietta will be joined by faculty soloists Javier Pinell, Naomi Gjevre, Ilonka Rus-Edry, and Mario Ascahuer, and will be conducted by Jonathan Pasternack.

The ensemble made its first appearance in fall 2014, in collaboration with the SHSU Choirs; however this is the first concert since the full sinfonietta program began.

“This program is a special one, as it will feature three SHSU music faculty members performing two of Johann Sebastian Bach's greatest works of the Baroque Era, the Concerto for Two Violins in D minor, and the Piano Concerto in D minor,” said Pasternack. “As a counterpoise to these two compositions, the sinfonietta will present the ethereal and evocative ‘Three Piece for Strings’ by the modern Polish composer, Henry Gorecki.

“The students will have the additional challenge of performing the Bach concertos in two very different styles: utilizing Baroque bows for their string instruments and a lighter, more incisive approach for the two violin concertos, and modern bows and a weightier, more sustained style for the piano concerto,” he said.

Aschauer, one of SHSU’s new musicology professors, will accompany the Sinfonietta on harpsichord for the two violin pieces.

Admission is free.

For more information, call the School of Music at 936.294.1360.

Sorority To Collect Donations For SAAFE House

Alpha Chi Omega will host its 23rd annual “Hugs and Pampers” drive, in support of the Huntsville SAAFE House, on Wednesday (Feb. 18) from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Austin Hall.

Through the drive, AXO has been able to provide tens of thousands of donated items such as toys, feminine products, cleaning supplies and childcare items to the SAAFE House, a local shelter for victims of sexual assault and abuse.

“This event is important to Alpha Chi Omega because our philanthropy is domestic violence awareness,” said Lindsey Ballard, AXO vice president of public relations and marketing. “To have a local SAAFE House in Huntsville, we can personally see how much of an impact we have on these women and children.

“We don’t have a set amount we’d like to collect; we just want to donate as much as possible,” she said. “Seeing everyone come together to support a local organization brings a smile to my face every year.”

For more information, contact Ballard at lnb022@shsu.edu.
