Nolan Elected to Council of Humanities

The organization advances lifelong learning in the humanities through advocacy, scholarships, grants, public programs and exhibits. It was established by the state in 1972 in partnership with the National Endowment for the Humanities. The 21-member TCH board is charged with creating opportunities that "engage the people of Texas in critical reflection of their individual and collective lives."

Nolan, director of the museum at Sam Houston State University since 1992, holds a doctorate in history from the University of Minnesota. Prior to coming to SHSU, he served as executive administrator of the Center for the History of Business, Technology and Society at the Hagley Museum and Library in Wilmington, Del. During that time he also taught history at the University of Delaware.

From 1973 through 1988, Nolan was an associate professor of history at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. While there he served as director of the Center for the History of Early Flight and as head of archives and special collections.

Among Nolan's many published works are two photographic histories of the Wright brothers' aviational exploits.

In addition to his teaching and administrative duties, Nolan has been awarded several research fellowships and has worked extensively as a consultant and investigator on a variety of historical and archival projects.

Others elected to the board at the November TCH meeting were: Arnoldo De Leon, the C.J. "Red" Davidson Professor of History at Angelo State University; Sylvia Ann Grider, associate professor of anthropology at Texas A&M University; Ray M. Keck, chair of the language, literature and arts department at Texas A&M International University; and Robert J. Mallouf, director of the Center for Big Bend Studies at Sul Ross State University.

The five new directors serve a three-year term beginning in January 1999.
