"After Dinner Theater" Features Two
Fun-Filled One-Act Operas Plus Dessert

Two humorous one-act operas and an assortment of tasty desserts will be served to Sam Houston State University music patrons at a special "After Dinner Theater" performance set for 7:30 p.m. Nov. 20 in the Lowman Student Center Ballroom on the SHSU campus.

The operas, Wolfgang Mozart's "The Impresario" and Thomas Pasatieri's "Signor Deluso," will be performed in English by members of the SHSU Opera Workshop with accompaniment from the SHSU Chamber Orchestra.

"While enjoying delicious desserts and coffee, this one-night-only event promises to tantalize your ears and tickle your funny bone," said Mary Kay Lake, SHSU voice instructor and interim director of the SHSU Opera Workshop.

Mozart's "Impresario," also know as "Der Schauspieldirektor," is the story of opera producer Herr Frank, who against his better judgement, is persuaded to undertake a new production. He runs quickly into trouble with the two women vying for the leading role, Madame Silverklang, an aging prima donna, and Miss Sweetsong, an aspiring ingenue. Ultimately, Herr Eiler, the banker backing the production, placates the singers, fires Herr Frank and makes himself the impresario. Herr Frank leaves, denouncing their greed.

The second opera, Pastieri's "Signor Deluso," follows the exploits of Célie, a woman in love with Léon but forced by her father to marry the wealthy Valére. A comedy of errors results when Célie faints on the town square and is helped by Signor Deluso. Clara, Deluso's wife sees him holding Célie and concludes he is being unfaithful. When Deluso sees Clara looking at a picture of Léon in a locket dropped by Célie, he makes the same assumption. Soon the couples all suspect their true loves are involved in affairs with others. Accusations and insults intensify until Célie's maid arrives to sort through the confusion.

General admission tickets for "After Dinner Theatre" cost $8. Student and senior tickets are $4. Call (409) 294-1395 or (409) 294-1360 to reserve tickets. Seating, Lake said, is limited.
