Koonts Named Assistant Coach
Deidre Koonts, a four-year starter as a guard for the LadyKat basketball team in 1992
through 1995 and head coach at Madisonville High School the past two
seasons, is returning to her alma mater as assistant women's basketball
coach at Sam Houston State. The past two seasons, Koonts has directed the
Madisonville Mustang girls' squad to a 50-15 overall record and consecutive
District 21-AAA championships. She was named district "Coach of the Year" both seasons.Koonts completed her career at SHSU ranked in the top five in career assists (283), three point field goals (121) and three point field goal percentage (.363). She served as a graduate assistant coach at SHSU in 1996. She replaces John Raff who was named as women's basketball head coach at Centenary College in Shreveport, LA, in May.
