Students Return

Some highlights of the campus academic calendar include a holiday in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Jan. 18, spring break March 15-19, Good Friday holiday for faculty and students April 2, final exams May 7, 10, 11, 12, and commencement May 15.

The spring music calendar opens Friday (Jan. 15) with a graduate tuba recital by David Smith-barry at 7:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall. Additional early semester events include a Poulenc Anniversary Voice Recital Jan. 19, featuring Robert Best and friends, and a faculty recital featuring Ann Fairbanks and guests Jan. 31.

"Echoes of the 16th Century," an unusual SHSU Chorale presentation utilizing the cathedral-like acoustics of the Sam Houston Memorial Museum, is scheduled Feb. 1 and 2.

Additional music events include a Jazz Festival Feb. 13, Opera Showcase March 25-26 in the Recital Hall, the SHSU Symphony Orchestra March 27 in Killinger Auditorium, the Contemporary Music Festival April 7-10, the East Texas Children's Choral Festival April 16, the Huntsville Community Chorale Society, Symphonic Choir, and Flute Choir April 20.

Drama events include "Ordinary People," in the Showcase Theatre Feb. 17-20, and "The Scarlet Letter" in the Mainstage Theatre March 3-6.

"Millenarian Movements: Welcoming the End of History" will be presented at the Walker Education Center March 5-6, the play "Subfertile" will be presented in the Showcase Theatre Theatre March 24-27, and "Brigadoon," the Department of Theatre and Dance's major spring production, April 14-17 in the Mainstage Theatre.

"Dance Spectrum in Concert" is scheduled April 29-30 and May 1 in the Mainstage Theatre.

'An Evening of Pinter'

The SHSU Department of Theatre and Dance will present a workshop production entitled, "An Evening of Pinter," Sunday, Jan. 10 at 8 p.m. in the Showcase Theatre.

The evening will consist of two plays, "Ashes to Ashes" and "Betrayal," both by the British playwright, Harold Pinter. "Ashes to Ashes" follows the discussion by a couple who remember the happiness and agony of their relationship in an attempt to stay together. Senior theatre major Todd Porter, and musical theatre alumnae Christin Nacke, portray Devlin and Rebecca, the two who try to cope with their emotional oblivion.

"Betrayal" depicts the story of Robert and Emma, a married couple, and Robert's best friend, Jerry. The triangles and betrayals in each of their relationships are shown in reverse chronology, as the scenes evolve from the present to the past.

"Betrayal" features senior theatre major Daoud Heidami as Jerry, senior musical theatre majors April Garton and Patrick Pearson, as Emma and Robert, and sophomore theatre major Trey Huguley, as the waiter.

Author Harold Pinter, one of the most prolific avant garde playwrights of the 20th century, is known for his unique writing style which incorporates select, meaningful silences known as Pinter Pauses.

The one-night, self-directed presentation is free and open to the public. The plays have adult language and situations.

Surplus Property Auction Set

Some of the items to be offered are computers, furniture, air conditioners, televisions, microwave ovens, refrigerators, storage cabinets, a welding machine, and an air compressor.

Roger Walters will serve as auctioneer.

SHSU departments may tag items for their use until Jan. 29. Sale items will be available for viewing throughout the day Friday, Feb. 12, except during the noon hour, and on the day of the sale from 7:30-8:30 a.m.
