Coleman Honored

The award was the first ever presented by the Council, and Coleman was the only recipient from a college or university.

"This was a pleasant surprise," said Coleman. "This award speaks well not only for the regard that area teachers have for my work but for the status of Sam Houston State University and everyone in our department."

Coleman, a professor in the Department of Mathematical and Informational Sciences, has taught at Sam Houston State since 1966. Most recently he has been active in writing materials for and making presentations related to the enhancing of mathematics using technology from pre-algebra through pre-calculus.

Coleman has directed and acted as primary investigator and instructor in four Eisenhower grant program summer institutes, and has written and modified material for these institutes as well as training material for the state.

He is also principal investigator on an Eisenhower program project focusing on the training of teachers for the newly-required course in secondary schools entitled Mathematical Modeling with Applications.

In addition to his grant-related work, Coleman teaches courses pertaining to teacher certification, and advises and files degree plans for all students getting a degree in mathematics with secondary certification.

He is conference director for the annual Conference on the Teaching of Secondary Mathematics held at SHSU each January, and is regional director for the University Interscholastic League with responsibility for conducting academic and athletic competition for Region III class 4A schools at SHSU.

Teskes Participate in Colloquium

The Humboldt Foundation was established by the Republic of Germany to enable top scientists from throughout the world to do research in Germany. Teske was awarded a Humboldt fellowship in 1979 and completed a research project at the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Penal Law in Freiburg.

He was recently invited to join 120 scholars from throughout the world to lecture at a special symposium to be held in Bamberg, Germany, in October, 2000. He will lecture on "Developments and Questions Regarding the Future of Criminal Procedures in the United States."

The foundation has also donated a special collection of books to the Sam Houston State University library in recognition of Teske's achievements.

Teske said that a nice feature of the recent event at Rice University was that his wife, Jane, and son, John, were also invited to participate. John graduated in December from Texas Lutheran University with degrees in biology and chemistry, and attended SHSU in the summer of 1998. He worked with SHSU faculty member Harry Kurtz, who directed John's senior research project.

"Meeting some of the leading scholars in these fields was extremely inspiring for him," said Teske.

The colloquium featured lectures from three scientists from Germany and one from the University of Houston.

Summer Orientation Leaders Sought

An information session for students interested in applying for positions will be held in room 310 of the Lowman Student Center Monday (Feb. 8) from 5-6 p.m. and Tuesday (Feb. 9) from 4-5 p.m.

Application forms are available in LSC Room 309 and due by 5 p.m. Feb. 16.

Successful applicants will be required to attend five freshman orientation sessions and two sessions for transfer students. The freshman sessions are slated for Sunday through Tuesday on June 13-15, June 20-22, June 27-29, July 25-27 and Aug. 1-3. One-day transfer sessions will be held on July 1 and 29.

Students selected for the program receive a $1,000 stipend -- $100 upon completion of a 45-hour training session, and $900 on Aug. 16, after the final orientation session. They are also furnished room and board during the sessions.

Alumni Scholarships Available

Application deadline for the scholarships, which will be awarded for the 1999 fall semester, is March 15.

Qualifications for the scholarships are varied, from very specific (a student participating in the softball program) to very general (a student of any level, any discipline, in financial need).

Yoga Class

Each one and a half hour class will include stretching, meditation and breathing exercise, and will be appropriate for beginners of all sizes, shapes and varieties, said Troxel.

The classes will meet from 4:30-6 p.m. and 6-7:30 p.m. in the Dan Rather Communication Building.

Cost for the six week course is $45, which includes a workbook, and class size is limited. Call Sandy Baker at 409-294-1497 or go by Communications Building room 322 to reserve a spot.

Alumni 'Jumbo Dog' Reception

The reception will be held in the Bearkat Lounge between the women's and men's games with Lamar University. The women's game is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. and is expected to end shortly after 7 p.m. The men's game starts 30 minutes later.

A special feature of Thursday doubleheader basketball games at Johnson Coliseum is "Jumbo Hot Dog Night," during which hot dogs are priced at 25 cents each.

Weatherall Reception

The reception will be held from 4:30-6:30 p.m. in the Walker Education Center of the Sam Houston Memorial Museum complex.

Surplus Property Auction

Roger Walters is auctioneer for the event scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. Saturday (Feb. 13).

Sale items will be available for viewing throughout the day Friday (Feb. 12), except during the noon hour, and on Saturday from 7:30-8:30 a.m.
