Week's Music Events Are Many, Varied

On Sunday from 3-5 p.m. world-renowned trumpet artist Anthony Plog, traveling all the way from his current teaching post in Freiburg, Germany, will hold a master class for SHSU music students.

On Monday Plog will perform a guest artist concert at 7:30 p.m., assisted by Charlotte Tull on piano and Randal Adams as narrator of Plog's highly entertaining composition "Animal Ditties."

A long-time friend of the late distinguished professor of music Fisher Tull, Plog will close with Tull's "Sonata for Trumpet and Piano," "Two Fabrications," and "Three Bagatelles."

Tuesday's event will be a performance of the SHSU Chorale at 7:30 p.m. in the Beto Criminal Justice Center's Killinger Auditorium.

On Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall, faculty violoncellist Peter Kempter will be joined by Hiromi Matsunaga on piano and Natalie Syring on flute.

The program will include a modern piece, Hilary Tann's "Llef for Flute and Cello," J. S. Bach's "Suite No. 3 in C major for Solo Cello," composed in 1720, and Samuel Barber's "Sonata for Cello and Piano, Op. 6," composed in 1932 and containing, according to Kempter, "two gorgeous, sustaining lyrical sections."

On Thursday the 55-piece Symphonic Band under the direction of Donald Ryder will perform "Konigsmarsch" by Richard Strauss, "Flourish for Wind Band" by R. Vaughan Williams, "A Psalm of Life (1997)" by Jack Gallagher, "Chorale and Toccata (1992)" by Jack Stamp, "Symphony No. 1: In Memoriam Dresden-1945" by Daniel Bukvich, and "Whip and Spur Galop" by Thomas S. Allen.

The Symphonic Band concert is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Killinger Auditorium, with a following reception hosted by members of the Tau Beta Sigma band service sorority in the atrium of the Music Building.

Hawthorne's 'Scarlet Letter' Takes SHSU Stage

The play will be directed by faculty member Penelope Hasekoester, and features Cristina Quevedo as Hester Prynne, Vance Lemley as the Reverend Dimmesdale, Todd Porter as Roger Chillingworth, and Sandy Gonzalez as Pearl. Also appearing will be Julie Boehm, Bill Giffen and Shannon Seaton.

Senior theatre major Christa Seekatz is the scenic designer, faculty member Jerry S. Hooker designed the lighting and Kristina S. Hanssen costumes. Sound is by senior theatre major Corby Sullivan, with George Curry Jr. as state manager.

Sam Houston's Birthday to be Celebrated

Other events include a reception at the Gibbs-Powell Home Museum (9:30-10:30 a.m.), speech by Randolph B. Campbell at the Houston grave in Oakwood Cemetery (11 a.m.), and dedication of the Sam Houston Statue Amphitheater and Toast to Texas at the Sam Houston Statue and Visitor Center (2 p.m.).

Also on Tuesday, at 1:30 p.m. in the Walker Education Center Exhibit Gallery, the Museum will open an exhibit entitled "Apocalyptic Visions--Myth, Movements and Mumbo-Jumbo in the 19th Century."

Sammy Awards to Honor Campus Service

Eighteen different awards will be given out for individual student leaders, outstanding student organizations, and outstanding faculty and staff members.

An additional 15 awards, named for SHSU's Sammy the Bearkat mascot, will go to 10 graduating seniors and five faculty/staff members.

Deadlines and important dates in the Department of Student Activities Sammy awards program include: March 5, nomination forms due; March 22, information forms due; March 25 and 26, emcee auditions, 3-4 p.m. in the Lowman Student Center Theater.

Also, April 1-16, RSVP with the Student Activities office at 409-294-FUN1; April 19, pick up tickets from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. in the University Theater Center; and April 19, Sammy Awards night at 7 p.m. in the University Theater Center.

Scholarship Applicants Sought

To be eligible for the undergraduate scholarship, an SHSU student must be a psychology major, a junior, have an overall grade point average of at least 3.0, including 3.0 or better in psychology. To qualify for the graduate scholarship, students must have completed one year of graduate study.

Applications are available in the psychology office, room 328 in the Lee Drain Building. Application deadline is March 26.
