Camfield Honored

"As a gesture of our further appreciation of Tom's 30 years of service to the university and his devotion to the education of our youth, the History Department is establishing a scholarship in his honor and is proud to announce that an anonymous donor has volunteered to match up to $5,000 in contributions to this fund," said Jim Olson, history chair.

"In lieu of donations toward a retirement gift, Tom encourages those so inclined to make generous contributions to assist with the establishment of this departmental scholarship."

Checks payable to the Thomas Camfield Scholarship Fund can be sent to the History Department; Box 2239 SHSU; Huntsville, TX 77341.

The department also encourages those planning to attend the reception to indicate that they intend to do so by Wednesday (March 31) by e-mail at his_cgm@shsu.edu or telephone at 409-294-1475.

Bilingual Scholarships

Michele R. Hewlett-Gomez, associate professor in Language, Literacy and Special Populations and director of Project UpBEATT, said that awards provide for partial reimbursement for tuition/fees, course textbooks, and/or a monthly stipend.

Project UpBEATT (United Program for Bilingual Educators as Teachers and Trainers) is funded by the U. S. Department of Education's Office of Bilingual Education and Minority Languages Affairs.

SHSU collaborates with the Aldine, Conroe and Cypress Fairbanks school districts to provide students practical experience as paraprofessionals or as volunteer tutors while attending college full time.

Housing Award

House manager Sarah Altes was presented SWACUHO's Outstanding Student Leader Award for Texas for 1999.

Altes has been involved in the Freshman Leadership program, with her hall council and with the Residence Halls Association, in which she has held several positions including programming coordinator and national residence hall honorary coordinator.

"Sarah is truly committed to contributing to the betterment of Sam Houston State University," said Mary Ellen Sims, coordinator of program development for Residence Life. "She has selected areas of involvement and followed through with whatever tasks she has taken on. In addition to her campus involvement, she still manages to maintain her studies and to fulfill her responsibilities as a house manager."

SHSU High in Hispanic Degrees

Figures include bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees.

Notification of the ranking came from Suzanne Lopez-Isa, public relations director for The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education magazine. The listing will be published in the magazine's April 23 issue, entitled "The Top 100 Colleges for Hispanics."

Data for the listing was provide by the National Center for Education Statistics, which is a part of the U. S. Department of Education.

Staff Excellence Awards

Winners will be announced when selections are made and the awards presented by Bobby K. Marks at the general staff meeting during the first week of the 1999 fall semester.

Each award includes a plaque and $1,000.

Nominees must be full-time employees with at least two years service, show meritorious service, display commitment to excellence in service, excel in her/his job, demonstrate outstanding ability, innovative ideas, efficient operations and a high level of motivation, and be respected by the university community.

Full-time university employees are eligible to make nominations. Forms are available through the Human Resources Department, and may be requested by calling 409-294-1068.

Writing Reception

The reception will also mark the official opening of the Sam Houston State University Academic Enrichment Center. It is scheduled for 2:30-4:30 p.m. in the center which is in room 117 of the Gresham Library.

Frank Fair, professor of philosophy, will present a speech entitled "Writing and Philosophy: From Socrates to E-Mail." The reception will also honor other student and faculty writers.

Blood Drive

The Blood Bank coach will be parked on the street near the west entrance to the Smith-Hutson Business Building from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A picture ID and social security number are required from those volunteering to give blood.

Apple Update

Topics to be covered include Power Macintosh G3, IMac, PowerPC G3/Pentium II comparisons, Mac Operating System 8.5, Mac Operating System X Server, Netboot network management, USB and FireWire, Windows 98 and Mac, and integrating new technologies into existing environments.
