Houston Astros on Channel 7

If you can't find Astros anywhere else this season, look to Sam Houston State University's Cable Channel 7. Huntsville's TCA Cable company has announced a schedule of 26 games to be aired on Cable Channel 7.

The first broadcast was the Astros season opener Tuesday against the Chicago Cubs. The next will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday against the San Francisco Giants.

Other games this month include the Cincinnati Reds April 23 (6 p.m.), and April 24 and 25 (noon) and Florida Marlins April 30 (6 p.m.).

"We're happy to be carrying the games," said Maryjo Cochran, coordinator of the Radio/Television program at SHSU. "They will certainly increase our exposure and boost our audience."

Community/School Concerts

"Koncerts for Kids" programs Huntsville elementary schools are scheduled April 12 and 14, and "Brown Bag and Boogie Concerts" April 22 and May 1.

The SHSU Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Carol Smith will present concerts Monday (April 12) from 1-1:50 p.m. in Stewart Elementary School and Wednesday (April 14) at the same time at Huntsville Elementary School.

Goals of the school concerts are to allow children to listen to part of a violin concerto by Haydn, observe a professional violinist as he performs, sit with Symphony players as they perform, learn how to listen and when to react, and enjoy music of the American heritage including "rags" of Scott Joplin and jazz of George Gershwin.

Billed as "community multi-cultural concerts," the "Brown Bag and Boogie Concerts" will be performed in the Jane Monday Amphitheatre from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. April 22 and noon to 1 p.m. May 1.

Performing groups will include the SHSU Symphony Orchestra, SHSU Percussion Ensemble, SHSU Jazz Ensemble, SHSU Soul Lifters, Huntsville Mariachis, SHSU Chamber Choir, and SHSU Chamber Orchestra.

"Brigadoon"

"Brigadoon" was performed in SHSU's Old Main Building in April, 1959.

Performances are scheduled for 8 p.m. daily with a 2 p.m. Saturday matinee.

Directed by Maureen McIntyre and choreographed by Jonathan Charles and Greg Graham, "Brigadoon" is the story of Tommy Albright (Scott Sidler), who, while vacationing with a friend, Jeff Douglas (Aryn Priest), stumbles upon the ancient town of Brigadoon, which only appears once each century.

The inhabitants of the town come to life before their eyes. Tommy falls in love with Fiona (April Garton), one of the villagers who lives in Brigadoon, and learns the true meaning of love overcoming all obstacles.

Other cast members include Dacus Allen, Marcus Butler, Christina Covington, Rhonda Curfman, Tracy Edwards, Cassandra Hanssen, Houston Hayes, Camille Helms, Leanne Hill, Heather Hodnett, German Ibarra, Tyler Jones, James Lane, Sarah Lilley, Megan Luft, Melissa Miller, Brent McBeth, Ian Nicolay, Robbie Nicolay, Ashlee Parker, Andrew Reed, Jayson Rivera, Shay Rodgers, Melissa Shytles, Jordan Smith, Mindy Sterling, Willis Wynn and Chris Zelko.

Those working behind the curtains, and their areas of responsibility, are Jerry S. Hooker (sets), Kristina S. Hanssen (costumes), Brian Veiga (lights), and Ryan Cooke (sound). Julianne Best is musical director, John C. Ross will conduct the orchestra, and Brandy Smith is stage manager.

Writing Centers Conference

Frank Fair, professor of philosophy, will speak on "Writing and Philosophy: From Socrates to E-Mail," at the reception at the center in Room 117 of the Newton Gresham Library.

The writing center conference will be held from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Academic Enrichment Center. Registration forms should be sent to Patricia Williams, director of the SHSU Across-the-University Writing Program.

The writing center conference will feature presentations on "Funding and Marketing a Writing Center," with Diane Dowdey, associate professor of English at SHSU, as moderator; "Elements of a Successful Consultation," moderated by Diana Cardenas and Susan Murphy of Texas A&M; "Writing Centers at Community Colleges," moderated by Stacey Moore of Montgomery College; and "Writing Tutors in the Classroom" with Stephen Newmann and writing tutors from Stephen F. Austin State University.

Ag Alumni Reunion

Bobby Lane, department chair, said that the event will begin at 11:30 a.m. at the SHSU Gibbs Ranch. A picnic lunch, tours, domino tournament and other fun events are planned for the afternoon.

That evening McKenzie's Barbeque will serve dinner in the banquet hall of the La Quinta Inn, beginning at 6 p.m., with a dance to follow.

Shower Scheduled

The Harding home was destroyed by fire recently, and the shower was planned to help replace items lost in the fire and to extend thanks to those who have already helped. A fund was also established at American Bank.

The shower will be held in the Huntsville Room in the Lowman Student Center. Selections have been listed at J. C. Penney and Target stores.

Students, Chapter Win Awards

This organization represents universities in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mexico.

Chris Reyes, junior from Rosharon, was selected as Student of the Year. Sarah Altes, a junior from Greenwood, Ark., received the Distinguished Service Award and was elected to the regional board of directors. A three-year service award was presented to Andrew Betts, sophomore from Richmond.

SHSU's Residence Halls Association chapter was also named first runner-up as School of the Year, an award that recognizes all-around excellence within the organization.

Miss Mahogany

Contestants will compete for more than $1,500 in scholarships and other prizes.

Sexual Assault Awareness

On Tuesday (April 13) as well as April 21, representatives from the Counseling Center and the Huntsville SAAFE House will be in the Lee Drain Building atrium providing information and discussing the issue.

Bernice Strauss, counseling psychologist, invites students, employees, and visitors to stop by and see if they can distinguish sexual assault fact from fiction. For more information, contact Strauss at 409-294-1720.
