Administration Workshop

Steve Ogden, who represents District 5 in the Texas Senate, will speak at the noon luncheon on "Legislative Action For the New Millennium."

Julian Shaddix, executive director of the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals, and Sandi Borden, executive director of the Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association, will give a "Legislative Update for Administrators."

Additional speakers include Austin attorney Laura Fowler, who will speak on "Legal Challenges: An Update"; Laverne Warner (SHSU College of Education and Applied Science) and Kay Timme (Conroe school district), who will speak on "Young Children: Our Leaders for the Next Century"; Jerry Hall (Region VI Education Service Center), who will speak on "Tips for Surviving the First Year"; and Linda Reaves, Region XIII Education Service Center, who will give an "Update on Appraisal for Administrators."

The workshop will conclude after a general session address by Mike Morrow, superintendent of Windham school district, on "The Future Is Not What It Used To Be."

Sessions are scheduled from 8 a.m. to 3:35 p.m. in the Lowman Student Center. Registration fee is $25, which includes conference sessions, lunch, and two coffee breaks. One hour of graduate credit is offered, with an additional fee for tuition.

Scholarships are also available for up to 20 members of a Region VI school district or educational leadership students at Sam Houston State University seeking principalship certification. Applications are due no later than May 14.

Government Documents

This is according to Richard Wood, director of the Newton Gresham Library at SHSU, which is a regional depository for government documents. Wood, and Frank Hoffmann, professor of library science, have also published the "Guide to Popular U. S. Government Publications 1995/1996," 5th edition.

Wood and Hoffmann had also published a 4th edition, and may publish additional editions if the need for such publications is not met by government Web sites.

Wood said that the SHSU library can help persons primarily in Walker, Montgomery, Polk, San Jacinto, and Grimes counties.

"Our reference books, like the Federal Depository Library Program itself," said Wood, "have for years been offering title-specific information for librarians, educators, teachers, students, business owners, consumers, exporters, importers, pilots, agricultural workers, hunters, dieters, engineers, health workers, and the general public."

Under the subject of Business, Small Business and Entrepreneurship were given increased attention in the most recent publications guide.

"Because the U. S. government remains the world's most prolific publisher, this finding tool for the most popular federal documents should continue to be helpful to teachers, students, librarians, and the general public," said Wood.

He also emphasized that the Newton Gresham Library is happy to assist in locating documents, there is no fee for the service, and purchase of his book is not required.

Semester Nears End

Degree applications for students graduating in December are due by Monday (May 3). The last day of classes is Wednesday (May 5), a study day is scheduled Thursday (May 6) and finals scheduled May 7, 10, 11 and 12.

Residence Halls close at 10 p.m. May 12. Commencement ceremonies are scheduled May 15 at 10 a.m. (Colleges of Education and Applied Science and Criminal Justice) and 2 p.m. (Colleges of Business Administration and Arts and Sciences) in Johnson Coliseum.

Robert Dunning, SHSU registrar, advises that all degree candidates should go by the Registrar's Office or call 409 294-1061 between 9 a.m. and noon May 14, to confirm completion of degree requirements.

Graduates are advised to report to the Health/Kinesiology Center one hour before their ceremony is scheduled to begin, or in the event of inclement weather, report to the coliseum floor for seating.

Dunning also suggests that commencement ceremony guests with disabilities, who would like to sit in special sections on the coliseum floor, should arrive at least 45 minutes before the ceremony is scheduled to begin and enter the coliseum through the east tunnel.

University police will direct guests with disabilities to a special parking area just east of the coliseum. Because space on the coliseum floor is limited, each guest with a disability should be accompanied on the floor by no more than one person.

Scholarship Applications Due

The scholarship is available to full-time benefits eligible staff and faculty, through the rank of assistant professor, who desire to take one class or one class with a lab (four semester credit hours maximum). Application criteria include:

• Applicants must have a minimum of one year full-time continuous employment at SHSU and have earned at least three semester hours at SHSU with a minimum grade point average of 2.0 (C);

• Undergraduate students with a 2.5 grade point average or higher will be given first priority;

• Graduate students with a 3.5 grade point average or higher will be given second priority.

Honors Recital is Tuesday

Joanna Thompson will present a junior piano recital at 7:30 p.m. Sunday in the Recital Hall, performing pieces by Mozart, Debussy, Brahms and Muczynski.

The Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday in Killinger Auditorium, and the best of Sam Houston State University's music students will perform in the Department of Music's Honor Recital at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Recital Hall.

Bowman Reception

Bowman has been a Sam Houston State University administrator for the past 18 years and director of alumni relations for five years. She plans to be married in June and to move to Lamesa, where her fiancé is a sergeant with the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Bowman came to Sam Houston State in 1981 as an area coordinator in university housing, transferred in 1983 to the Office of Student Life where she was an assistant dean, and became director of alumni relations in 1994.
