Summer is Here

Monday is a campus holiday in observance of Memorial Day, but residence halls open on Tuesday, late registration for undergraduate and graduate students is Wednesday, and classes begin on Thursday. The first summer session ends July 7.

Late registration for the second summer session is July 8, with classes beginning July 9. Summer commencement is August 14.

And while summer in Huntsville may begin early, so does fall. The 1999 fall semester begins with residence hall openings August 22 and first classes August 25.

Study Abroad Awards

The scholarship, established by the 72nd Texas Legislature, is funded by a $1 fee levied on each student each semester. Candidates for the scholarship were chosen by the International Education Fee Scholarship Awards Subcommittee, chaired by Witold J. Lukaszewski, professor of political science.

In history, Rose Botkin will do an independent study of Chinese policy, history and culture in Beijing, under the supervision of Tracy Steele, assistant professor of history.

Art students, supervised by Darryl Patrick, professor of art, will study history of art in Florence, Italy. Art students receiving awards were Susan Akin, Jacqueline Anderson, Francisco Chavez, Heather Douglass, Laura Glenn, Thomas Hydrick, Mary Lynch, Kathy Morgan, Nancy Pfeifer and Caryn Rock.

Music student Suzanne Scott will pursue orchestra studies and chamber performance in Rome.

French students Deborah Caligiuri and Jennifer Williams will study in Quebec and Sarah Voskamp will study at the Sorbonne in Paris.

Deborah Faldik, a criminal justice student, will take an internship with INTERPOL at their headquarters in Lyon, France.

Students receiving scholarships to study with the Puebla Field School were Camille Bridge, Anna Garcia, Maria Lemus, Nidia Medina, Kari Pease, Mary Sowell, Christie Scholler and Rolando Trevino.

Business students who received funds to attend the Puebla Field School were Mandy Bowles, Ann Cap, Julie Courington, Jaima Punchard and Edward Villarreal.

Also receiving funds for studies in Mexico were graduate students from the College of Education and Applied Science, supervised by Beverly Irby, associate professor in educational leadership and counseling. They were Heath Burns, Judith Christensen, Jimmy Creel, Naomi Hansen, Rowan Ljungdahl, Doris Meyer, Vicki Stanfield, Hallie Trautman, Rita Watkins and Angela Widener.

Little Bearkats Sought

The center is also having an open house for interested parents and children on Tuesday, June 15, from 4-7 p.m. Interested parents or guardians are invited to meet the center's new teacher and hear about the program.

The center is housed in the Teacher Education Center on the SHSU campus. Students pursuing education degrees work with the children and are supervised by a certified teacher.

The center is also offering partial scholarships to SHSU students who have children enrolled in its program. Scholarship money is made possible by the Department of Student Life. Application forms are available in the Teacher Education Center, Room 230.

Gaddis Geeslin Gallery

First place winner Westerman's work, "NW," is mixed media, utilizing books, wax and water.

First alternate Glenn is showing a plaster ceramic entitled "Shrine." "Model," by second alternate Wilson, is oil on canvas.

The Gaddis Geeslin Gallery is located in the art complex on the southwest corner of the SHSU campus. It is operated by the Sam Houston State University Department of Art and is open from noon to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Admission is free.

Keynote Speaker

Hewlett-Gomez's topic will be "Beyond Staff Development for Teachers and Administrators."

Project UpBEATT (United Program for Bilingual Educators as Teachers and Trainers) is funded by the U. S. Department of Education's Office of Bilingual Education and Minority Languages Affairs.

SHSU collaborates with the Aldine, Conroe and Cypress Fairbanks school districts to provide students practical experience as paraprofessionals or as volunteer tutors while attending college full time.

Yoga Class

Amanda Troxell, a licensed yogi, has designed classes for the basic beginner to the intermediate exerciser, with one and one-half hour sessions of stretching, strengthening and relaxation.

The intermediate class will meet from 4:30-6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, with beginner sessions following from 6-7:30 p.m. Sessions are scheduled for the Dan Rather Communications Building.
