Summer I Enrollment

Enrollment for the first summer session is 4,809, an increase of 19 students above the first summer session in 1998. The first summer session ends July 7.

Late registration for the second summer session is July 8, with classes beginning July 9. Summer commencement is August 14.

Also under way this week at SHSU will be the first of seven summer orientation programs, including five for new students and two for transfer students. Some 280 freshmen and 240 parents/guests are expected for the three-day program beginning Sunday.

Future orientation dates for new students are June 20-22, June 27-29, July 25-27, and Aug. 1-3. Transfer student orientation dates are July 1 and July 29. Last summer 1,456 freshmen and 1,200 parents/guests attended the sessions.

Students are encouraged to attend because it gives them useful information and a good start toward their first semester at SHSU. Information is available at 409-294-1782. See also, the Summer Orientation Web site.

Museum Events

The first Sam's Camp, for 7th graders and above, is scheduled for June 21-25, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day on the museum grounds. A number of age-appropriate activities relating to 19th century homesteading in Texas are planned for each Sam's Camp.

Sam's Camps are also scheduled July 5-9 and July 26-30 for 2nd and 3rd grades and July 19-23 for 4th-6th grades. Sam's Camp tuition is $80 for the week, or $20 per day for individual days.

Also scheduled this summer are three demonstrations entitled "School of the 19th Century Soldier," from 11 a.m. to noon June 26, July 24, and August 28.

July 4 will also be a big day at the museum in conjunction with the noon to 4 p.m. activities scheduled on the courthouse square. American Indian crafts will be demonstrated by the Alabama-Coushatta tribes from noon to 4 p.m. at the museum.

Pottery demonstrations are scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 3 and August 7, and a hands-on craft demonstration from 11 a.m. to noon July 10 and August 14.

An exhibit entitled "Images of Texas in the 1930s: The Photographs of Polly Smith," will open July 22.

The museum is located at 1836 Sam Houston Avenue. Many of its events are in the Katy & E. Don Walker, Sr. Education Center at 1402 19th Street.

Birdsall to Make History Presentation

The organization is dedicated to living history museums and organizations that utilize living history at their site. Birdsall's presentation will focus on adult education trends in the museum field.

Birdsall has been employed at the Sam Houston Memorial Museum since 1994. He earned his bachelor's degree in education and master's in history from SHSU.

Technology Seminar

SHSU was one of only five sites in the United States chosen for the seminar, which was sponsored by Texas Instruments.

A featured instructor in the course was Jill Gough from Pennsylvania, who was selected as one of this year's winners of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. SHSU faculty members Greg Foley (left in photo) and Mark Klespis (right in photo) coordinated the seminar. They are shown in a discussion with seminar instructors Allan Bellman and Sam Gough.

The institute was designed to explore algebraic concepts and applications through the use of technology in the teaching and learning of mathematics and science. Activities focused on the integration of computers, calculators, data collection devices and the Internet as tools in the classroom.

Little Bearkat Open House

Interested parents or guardians are invited to meet the center's new teacher and hear about the program. The center is housed in the Teacher Education Center at SHSU.

The center is enrolling children for the fall semester who were three and four years old (as of May 1) for its half-day program. SHSU students pursuing education degrees work with the children and are supervised by a certified teacher.

The center is also offering partial scholarships to SHSU students who have children enrolled in its program. Scholarship money is made possible by the Department of Student Life.
