Images of Texas

Texans who lived through those years, and those who have only heard about them, can take a trip back in time beginning July 22 with the opening of "Images of Texas: The Photographs of Polly Smith," at the Walker Education Center on the Sam Houston State University campus.

An opening reception is scheduled for 4 - 7 p.m., and the exhibit will continue through August 29.

Polly Smith was hired by the Texas Centennial Commission, traveling through the state to capture the spirit of the people as they struggled with the economy and prepared to celebrate their independence.

Smith's black and white photos are said to resemble the great documentary photographers of the 1930s-Dorothea Lange, Walker Evans, and Arthur Rothstein. In 1936 her work appeared in "House Beautiful," "Pictorial Review," "Furniture Age," and "Architectural Forum."

Her images of Texas in the mid-1930s include cotton and what farming, oil production, sulfur mining, cattle ranching, and logging. Photos of the pine forests, lakes and farms also document the state's natural beauty.

The exhibit is presented by the Sam Houston Memorial Museum in conjunction with the Texarkana Museums System and is made possible by a grant from the Texas Council for the Humanities. The photographs are from a collection of the Dallas Historical Society.

Lions Establish Endowment

The Lions have for many years awarded eight $500 scholarships to Huntsville High School seniors, about half of whom this past year chose to attend Sam Houston State University.

Now they have presented $5,000 to SHSU for establishment of the Huntsville Lion's Club Endowed Scholarship Fund, which will provide a new scholarship each year for a student attending Sam Houston State.

"Our new scholarship will be a win-win for both Huntsville High School and Sam Houston State," said Steve Bullard, right, outgoing secretary-treasurer who presented a check recently to Gary A. Bouse, executive director for university advancement at SHSU.

Bullard recently presented the club's second $2,500 check to SHSU and said that the club intends to increase the endowment to $10,000 in future years.

"The students of Sam Houston State University are most fortunate to have the support of Huntsville's civic organizations, and we appreciate the hard work by members of the Huntsville Lions Club who established this endowment," said Bobby K. Marks, SHSU president.

"We are very grateful for the Lions Club support of Sam Houston State University," said Bouse. "Gifts from community groups such as the Lions are evidence of their confidence in our mission and efforts to provide the best possible environment for the personal growth and achievement of our students."

Whatley Recital

Whatley's recital in Killinger Auditorium of the Beto Criminal Justice Building is in partial fulfillment of the degree of Master of Music in Piano Performance.

Whatley will perform Franz Joseph Haydn's "Sonata in b minor," Sergei Rachmaninoff's "Three Etudes-Tableaux," and Johannes Brahms' "Variationen und Fuge uber ein Thema von Handel fur Pianoforte."

Admission is free.

Surplus Property Auction

A 1955 GMC maintainer, four vehicles, beds, drafting tables, a commercial dishwasher, computers, office furniture, chairs and bicycles are just some of the items that will be available.

Sale items may be inspected on Friday, July 23, from 8 a.m. - noon and 1-5 p.m. and on the day of the sale from 7:30 - 8:30 a.m. The sale will begin at 8:30 a.m.

The property warehouse is located in the Sam South Complex, 2424 South Sam Houston. The maintainer will be available for inspection at the Gibbs Ranch.

Walking Aerobics Survey

The department proposes two programs:

"Wonder Walkers" will be "a walk around the SHSU campus and an intense cardiovascular workout, led by a group leader (instructor) on a structured course with plenty of motivation."

"BearKat Walkers" will meet in the Health-Kinesiology Center lobby and join other SHSU community members in a lunchtime walk. Maps will be provided with routes of varying distances, and it will be an informal program with no instructor.

Emergency Medical Technician - Basic begins Aug. 3 and runs through Dec. 17. Professional Phlebotomy is Oct. 4-Feb. 9, 2000. Nurse Aide Training runs Sept. 14-Nov. 12.

Also, Medication Aide Training is Nov. 16-April 29, 2000, and Chemical Dependency Counselor Basic Education Course is offered Sept. 11-July 2, 2000.
